Subject: RH 7.1 "Can't locate module"/soundcard question
Date: 2 May 2001 08:10:28 -0400

Hi! I just installed RedHat 7.1 on a dual-boot Compaq E4600 (Pentium
4, 30GB HD, 256MB RAM) system, with Windoze 2000 on the other
partition.

Most things worked fine out of the box -- dual boot (in spite of dire
warnings that I might have to use the boot floppy), video, network,
etc.

The sound card, however, isn't working.

Sndconfig correctly identifies it as a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live!
EMU10000

Looking at the /var/log/messages file after running
sndconfig, I find:

May 2 07:40:12 butner kernel: Creative EMU10K1 PCI Audio Driver,
version 0.7, 20:53:49 Apr 8 2001

May 2 07:40:12 butner kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 3 for device 02:0a.0

May 2 07:40:12 butner kernel: EMU10K1 rev 7 model 0x8032 found, IO at
0xdf80-0xdf9f, IRQ 3

May 2 07:40:12 butner modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
sound-service-0-0

On the Windoze side, the card is noted to be a Creative SB Live!(WDM),
but at IRQ number 9. The IO address 0xdf80-0xdf9f is the same.
It's identified at PCI slot 2 (PCI bus 2, device 10, function 0).

So, I see two differences and one worrying error:

I don't know if there is a difference between a SoundBlaster Live!
EM10000 and a SoundBlaster Live! (WDM)

I don't know if the IRQ 3 vs IRQ 9 thing is a problem or reflects
a software reset.

I don't know what the "can't locate module sound-service-0-0"
error implies -- is this a module I should find somewhere on
the distribution diskette? If so, how can I force it to load?

Any pointers would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi,

I am new to linux, and have decided to dual boot my pc to run both Linux and
Win98 so I can get the hang of Linux for a while before running it by
itself.

I can't seem to get the install right? The LILO doesn't write to the MBR?

I have a 20Gb Disk drive set up as follows:

15GB - Win98SE Partition
32MB - Linux Boot Partition
128MB - Swap Partition
4.8GB - Linux Root Partition

I have installed Win98 first and tried to install Linux onto the remaining
partitions - files copy ok but the LILO doesn't come up when i restart the
machine. I have tried both with and without the above boot partition.

Is there an easy way to dual boot windows and linux??? I am not much of an
M$ fan, but would like to run both until I become more accustomed to Linux.

Any help on setting up a dual boot system would be appreciated.

Thanks

What's it like not being able to afford $30 and not having any friends with the
ability to own a cdrom?

It doesn't have to be a permenant instalation and whining and bitching about
needing what can be had for $5, used, is just pathetic.

Don't. 2.4.0 has serious bugs that can cause massive filesystem
corruption. Use 2.4.4.

You have probably forgotten to compile in the networking card driver or
compile it as a module. Or perhaps you have changed to another driver.
You will probably need to go through your kernel configuration again
(which you should anyway as you should upgrade to 2.4.4) or change
/etc/modules.conf to use the correct module.

Hint: If you have a RTL8139 based card, you should change 'alias eth0
rtl8139' to 'alias eth0 8139too'.

ldd --version

Other libraries have other methods. ls -l /lib/libsomething.so* is one
way. (or ls -l /usr/lib/libsomethingother.so*). There is no general way
to do it (unless you have rpm [rpm -q libraryname] or some other package
format).

Do the num-lock / caps-lock lights go on/off when these keys are
pressed? If not - check that the cable is plugged correctly in.

Can you use the keyboard at the lilo prompt? Text-mode? In X?

Emu10000 (or emu10k) is the name of the chip on the soundblaster live.
WDM is some strange win2k-ism (some kinf of driver name I think).

Just reflects that Windows 2000 is messing around with the IRQ's.

This should be no problem - I get it a lot of times. You could, however,
try to put 'alias sound-service-0-0 emu10k' in /etc/modules.conf.

Hi ,

In windows if you delete any thing it goes to Recycle bin . So you can
restore it back.
Similarly , in linux what is the standard folder holds all the deleted
things before completely unlink the things from the filesystem.. so that
if i need it back i can restore it............

Could you help me the answer for this innocent ( newbee ) question.

Linux does not have a general trash bin functionality. When something is
deleted, it is gone. KDE (and perhaps Gnome too?) has a trashbin
functionality however - but it is not a general linux feature.

You probably need to install the glibc-devel package (I guess it is
called so on Suse).

No. There's nothing inherent in the filesystem that saves deleted
files for later recovery. Once you delete a file, it's gone.

However, there's nothing stopping you from making a hardlink of the
file into another directory. _Then_ you can delete the file from the
original directory and still have a 'fallback file'.

You could then hide the rm command (move it or alias it) and make a
script that hardlinks the file and executes the moved rm command,
duplicating the 'delete from GUI' facility in Windows.

(NB: MSDOS and MSWindows (up to Win98 AFAIK) *don't* move files to the
"Recycle Bin" when the file is deleted from the commandline, or
directly by a program. This "Recycle Bin" feature is *only* available
through the GUI tools, implying that Microsoft did essentially the
same thing as is suggested above, namely making the GUI delete do a
move and delete.)

Not a RH user but I didn't have much luck with my dot matrix and
apsfilter on Slackware. Couple of other utilities didn't give me
very good output either.
Got a hold of magicfilter (after seeing it mentioned here a few times)
and it works just fine. No problems so far though I don't do much
printing anyway. I'd take a look at that if possible.

You have to boot Linux with your floppy and type cfdisk at the command
prompt. Then you can make /boot the active partition and select the "write"
button to write it to disk.
