I had similar problems with Suse 7 on a pentium 75 system. It turned out te
be bad memory chips.
quote from http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/kfr_58.html :
Even if the system is stable under DOS or Windows, for example, this doesn't
say anything about the stability of the hardware and its configuration. The
hardware manages to work with the slow segmentated memory access of a CPU
working in 16 bit realmode (under DOS, Windows). As soon as the memory is
accessed in linear mode with 32 bit bursts, errors can occur

There are some good instructions for setting up two nework cards

Uhm, did you run "/sbin/lilo -v" after modifying lilo.conf? You have to
run it to be effective since /sbin/lilo writes the info on MBR (or
whereever you chose).
Cheers.

Check the version of xscreensaver. If it is >- 3.28 (RH 7.0 uses 3.27,
but you might have upgraded it.), xscreensaver takes over the DPMS
control. You have to configure xscreensaver by using xscreensaver-demo or

Having checked all my Linux systems, the thing that sounded wrong in your
e-mail has been confirmed to me...
I *think* that the /boot partition *must* be /dev/hda1 no /dev/hda4 - as
/dev/hda1 is the first primary partition on the disk - hence the first 1024
cylinders kinda end up being within this partition - if what Druid is
telling you is true, the /boot partition isn't the 1st on the drive...hence
your problems, I think - although I am very tired.

Hi Horst,
I'm currently runnin (trying to run) a very similar configration to
yours.
I installed Win2000 then managed to ahve Linux (Distro is Mandrake). I
worked out the fact that the linux won't work properly unless I install
the XFree4, but I now seem to be unable to boot in Win2000.
My disk is partition like this :
/hda1 : 1 Gb --> Win2000 NTFS (Type 07 in cfdisk)
/hda5 : 1.5Gb --> /usr Ext2
/hda6 : 2 Gb --> Data Win FAT32
/hda7 : 2 GB --> Pgrm Win Fat32
/hda8 : 520Mb --> Swap
/hda9 : 800Mb --> / Ext2
/hda10 : 1.7Gb --> /opt Ext2
The system boots fine in Linux but doesn't seem to be able to view the
Win partition anymore...
When requesting to boot up in Win it just says
Loading Win
And then nothing .... Here below you may find attached copy of my
lilo.conf that I've modified a few times now without success (without
forgetting to /sbin/lilo afterwards each time).
Can you help ?

Hello,
You don't have the proper permissions setup in /etc/hosts.allow. Add this:
ALL: LOCAL
LOCAL allows access from machines in the local domain.
If you want to configure the permissions differently look at the man pages
for hosts.allow and hosts.deny for all the options you can put in these
files.

Really??? ext2fs is built into the hardware????
I didn't know I had to buy different hardware for DOS,
FAT32, NTFS, ext2fs, etc...
I'll have to make sure I ask next time I'm at Best Buy, since
software cannot mess with inodes (and buy that extension,
FATs, MBRs, etc...)

Perhaps you would like to spend 3-6 weeks staring at a
box waiting to see if the fault manifests itself again. I
prefer to have a reliable device faster than that.

Here's what I did to get my Sympatico HSE connected from Debian
Potato:
1) Install the pppoe package
2) Copy the /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider file to
/etc/ppp/peers/sympatico-adsl
3) Added the following line to the end of the new file:
user [EMAIL PROTECTED]
where b1xxxxxx is my User ID for sympatico
I also changed the "eth0" to whatever network card is connected to my
ADSL modem
4) Changed BOTH my /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and /etc/ppp/chap-secrets to
contain my Sympatico password. I added a line like this to the end of
each file:
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" * "PASSWORD"
where PASSWORD is my real Sympatico password.
5) Added the following to the /etc/network/interfaces file:
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.100.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
iface ppp0 inet ppp
provider sympatico-adsl
Again substituting "eth0" with the network card that is connected to
your ADSL modem. The first part sets up a static address for your
network card. This address is temporary and will be overridden once
the connection is running. This step is not absolutely necessary but
it speeds things up.
5a) If you are using woody (the version of Debian after 2.2), you'll also
have to add these lines to the end of the file to have the connection
automatically come up when booting up the system:
auto eth0
auto ppp0
This step is not necessary for potato because potato will
automatically start up these connections for you.
6) Edit /etc/resolv.conf so that it points to the Sympatico name
servers. Mine looks like:
nameserver 204.101.251.1
nameserver 204.101.251.2
7) Try to bring the link up with the following commands:
ifup eth0
ifup ppp0
If you run "netstat -r", you should see two ppp0 Iface entries and an
eth0 (or whatever) entry. One of the ppp0 entries should be your
default route.
Give this a whirl and see if it works.

The contents of /dev are indeed "real files". In Unix, everything[0] is
either a file or a process. Sure, you can't do anything with cp, but
tar, afio, and cpio have code in them to handle special files like those
in /dev .
For /proc , the -l option to tar may prove useful. Read the info page
for tar; it's quite useful.

Not to worry. All Mandrake versions, including the enw 8.0, work perfectly
on Athlon machines. That's what I'm using myself, as a matter of fact.

Subject: Doing a little research regarding AMD Duron
Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 23:07:27 -0400
Hi, I would like to hear from anyone who has successfully installed a Linux
distro on a machine running an AMD Duron processor. In your reply, please
include your system configuration, the related distro with version, and any
other pertinent information. I would also like to hear from those who have
been unable to install Linux on a Duron machine. Please, of course, include
the info mentioned above.
Thanks for your help!
