Subject: Rebooting problem on a SUN SPARCstation 10.
Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 14:11:52 +0200
Hi,
I've got a old SUN SPARCstation 10 with 2 processors. Every time a
reboot or shutdown the system it freeze during the shutdown process and I
need to power down manually. Of course, I've got a file system error during
booting. I read on the SUN web site that is better to have 2 processors
with neerest serial number possible. So I change both processor with the
neerest serial I find at work but I've got the same problem.

I have a problem with increasing the annoying default max 8 character in
passwords under SuSE 7.x.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to increace this lengt? I have
tried to change PASS_MAX_LEN in /etc/login.defs but it still just checks
the first 8 characters! :-(
Any suggestions are appreciated..

Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 10:17:17 -0400
Hi, if anybody can help me to configure my win2k and linxu boot up.
I have 60G hard disk. The partition is as following:
hda1 : 10G ----------Win2k
hda2: 24M----------/boot
hda3: 46G-----------extend
hda5: 15G------------/
hda6: 2G-------------<swap>
hda7: 15G------------win32
hda8: 15G------------win32
After I install linux (RedHat 6.2), I have to boot from floppy. I created a
boot file using
dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/mnt/floppy/linux.bin bs=512 count=1.
However, after I copy that file to c and add one line
c:\linux.bin="Linux".
It still can't boot linux from hard disk.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I am a new user to Linux. But I would suggest Linux users to read a box
product's release note when installing a new RH version.
In RedHat 7.1 release note, it clearly says Java SDK 1.3 won't work
with it. And it also provides the solution
I think linux products become more and more complecated (and release
deadline become more and more critical to marketing). It's not surprising
that linux is sharing more and more problems with Microsoft. Some people
will become experts in solving this kind of annoyances. This is also an
opportunity. Isn't it?

You can probably get the sound on that MB to work by installing the alsa
drivers, libs & utils. Remove references to sound in /etc/modules.conf and
add the following to the bottom of /etc/rc.d/rc.local
modprobe snd-card-via686a
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
sleep 1
aumix -v100 -w100
Listening to RealPlayer right now with that sound setup on an Athlon MB
using the KT133 chipset.

Subject: Xterm exits..
Hi all,
I'm trying to run a program in an xterm that outputs lines of text and
then exits. When this happens, the xterm goes away as well. I'd like to
be able to read the output and then kill the xterm window at my
pleasure.
For example, if you type at the command line,
$ xterm -e fortune
or
$ xterm -e fortune &
An xterm window appears for a tenth of a second with (presumably :)
output from fortune in it, then it exits.
I've tried paging with less, thinking that the terminal would be held by
less and that the xterm process would not exit until after the less
process exited,
$ xterm -e fortune | less &
but this gives the same result. Using less in combination with the
command would be ideal, probably, because when I hit "q" in less, the
xterm would go away as well.
I also tried
$ xterm -e "fortune &"
$ xterm -e "fortune | less &"
But I only get a new xterm that has the error message:
xterm: Can't execvp fortune &
How can I get xterm to do what I want??
Thanking you,

Just a hunch, but try;
xterm -e "fortune | less" &
You need to background (with &) the xterm, not the command inside it; &ing
less may well have crippled it.

Debian's install process is a little tricky to get your head wrapped
around at first, so it may not meet your "no rocket science" requirement
:^), but it definately has a very good ability to start the install off of
minimal initial media and the rest over network. Once you've got what you
want installed, maintenance and upgrading are very easy too.
It also has pretty fine package granularity so you generally don't need to
install more than you really need.
If this is your first Linux install, don't worry about it too much.
Consider the first attempt a "throwaway" so that you'll know better what
to do next time and how not to screw it up :^) Help is everywhere!

The easiest way:
Buy a second hard drive...cheap 10 gig
Install any distribution from bootable CD
onto the second hard drive.
Install lilo on linux root partion and boot from floppy.
These options are usually available during install.
*DO NOT install lilo in the MBR-master boot record.
This is the safest way I have found for people
with little experience.

You said you used FreeBSD but it was terse. On the command line, all
of *nices are terse (and this is why we love them!). BTW FreeBSD would
have been an excellent choice regarding to the networking speed.

Yes. You might take a look at OpenBSD, http://www.openbsd.org which is
very secure by default. It is very terse, but it does teach you Unix.
Also, their man pages are really excellent and up-to-date.

Been there, failed, too. Too bad, now I installed Rock Linux instead of
Slackware.

I just installed 7.1, and I didn't have any real problem with it.
The rpm package managenent nice if you learn. (a couple of more
distros use rpm).
On the distro side. I would give you the standard answer. Choose the
distro your closest friend use whom you can bug even on Christmas Eve.

Usually people suggest 2xRAM as swap. About the rest. Your / should be
something like 300-500MB. /home is questionable. It depends how much
stuff you want to offer for the rest of the world. This is your knowledge.
If you add users to the machine, then you have to decide how much free
space yu let them hog (quota) and modify your idea accordingly.
/var depends on how much traffic and logging you are going to have.
I might recommend putting /usr on a separate partition and you might
mount it ro so if anything crashes you save a bit on fsck.
> Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
If you state that your knowledge is none, then I am impressed with your
down-to-the-point description of your requirements.
