Exactly.

I had RH 5.2 running on a 486 with 8 MB of RAM and 127MB+ Swap; it did
work. X was a bit slow and I didn't use a desktop -- NO KDE or GNOME --
just fvwm or twm to run applications.
You could probably install RH7.1. You can make a standard install if
you have a large enough disk. But you will probably find KDE or GNOME
too slow and if you want to try them you would need 256MB of Swap.
There is a theory that two 127MB Swap partitions are faster than one
large one. As I said above, you will probably want to use fvwm or twm
to run X applications. GUI applications will not be very fast.
On the other hand if you want it for Console only, it should be OK.
But, I would add memory if you have room for it on the Mother Board.
If it is an old type of memory, try picking it up used at Computer
Renaissance.

It's still there, you have to install the package 'gnome-linuxconf' in
addition to plain old linuxconf.

Thanks to all for your help.
I created the missing /proc, then the missing /boot .. now there is the
missing /var. I think /var is the only thing left that is missing.
Is there any way of rebuilding /var? Unfortunately it isn't just a mount
point like the others. It should actually contain information. Am I out of
luck here or is it still possible to recover without reinstalling? Does
anyone know exactly what directories and files need to be here? Can I
install RH on another machine and copy the tree over? Am I just delaying
the inevitable?

I have a dual boot Windows 98 / 2000 pro non-networked system :
Soyo 6CVA system board with VIA chipset
20GB HDD
PCI ISDN adapter (AVC?)
ATI 128 Rage AGP card
On board sound (VIA audio)
HP 9100 series CD-RW
HP Deskjet 840C printer
Mouse & Keyboard.
Complete beginner with Linux.
Very concerned about screwing up my current set-up, which is proving to be
very reliable.
Will my hardware work under Linux?
I'm more concerned about learning Linux than the non-essential hardware
(like CD-RW) not working.
I understand Mandrake installs within Windows?
So you would boot into Windows, and then 'into' Mandrake?
Any help/advice would be very welcome.

Not bad ideas, but I'd try something simpler first, such as running
cpuburn, bonnie, and a kernel compilation simultaneously. Oh, and
throw in an scp over the net at the same time. Sometimes it's a pure
pci bus glitch.

Hi there,
The top line in ftpaccess should be:
class ftp anonymous,guest *
you can exclude anonymous. You should now be able to logon with a local
username added in linuxconf......
linux sucks! I need a GUI!

Continueing with the wierdness:
in /usr/local/lib directory
[adam@c1459607-a lib]$ ldd libgphoto2.so
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4007a000)
libgphoto2_port.so.0 => not found
libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/libc.so.6 (0x4007e000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x2aaaa000)
So I did a pasted libgphoto2_port.so.0 right into a ldd command
[adam@c1459607-a lib]$ ldd libgphoto2_port.so.0
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4005b000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/libc.so.6 (0x4005f000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x2aaaa000)
it looks ok.

Thanks Charlie,
Don't worry about sounding assumptive of my abilities, I'm a bit
thick, but learning fast :)
However - yes of course I ran lilo after editing lilo.conf!
vga = 9
vga = 122
vga = 0x0122
in lilo.conf returned:
"You passed an undefined mode number." (ouch)
I finally found out (in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/svga.txt) that
the hex mode numbers need to be converted to decimal for lilo.conf,
hence,
"vga = 290" = beautiful screen :O)
Thanks again,
H.
PS While we're on the subject though, I fail to see why I can get all
these nice possible screen modes with with an 8MB ATI Rage Pro, when
not half as many are possible after a scan on my other machine which
has a 32MB Matrox G400 Max....(!) It's all black magic to me.....

Stop looking for microsoftish senselessnesses. Find out what is
happening first, then decide how to fix it, then fix it. Your first
task is to look at what's up! That means tracing the sequence of
events.
We/you first need to know if the listening port is active. Telnet to it
and use netstat (both sides) to find out the state of the socket. Check
if there is a process listening on that port (fuser, pstree). If there
is, find out what it is doing (strace).
I would guess that you've forgotten to set up DNS, and the machine
is looking up the IP of the incoming connection in order to check it against
tcp wrappers. Add its data to your /etc/hosts.

You can do the copy without worrying. "cp -aR". Your system is stable.
The only varying part once running is /var, and that's trashable
anyway.

man mount. The -r and -o remount options. But why not just change to
runlevel "s" in order to quieten things down?

.. please don't make mountains out of molehills! But probably the
knowledge that it IS a molehill is what you need. Read the Partition

I had the same problem you have, if you did a custom install and installed
everything. Ip chains is running and blocking all the ports below 1023. Try
this: find . -name "???ipchains*" -exec rm {} \;
This one line cleared up my problem. You have to change ip chains for your servers
to work.
