With the original install of Linux Mandrake 7.2, xfs is run at boot.
Now that I have upgraded to XFree86 4.0.3 I am supposed to load the
module "Freetype". The docs say freetype and xtt can't run at the same
time, how about freetype and xfs? Do I need to turn off the automatic
loading of xfs at boot?
When I turned off xfs, X would not start up.

That might work great, if I had a Slackware CD...
I gave up, and cobbled together a 200MHz Pentium MMX system from some

let me boot from the CD. :-)
I am still curious to know if I could resurrect the 486 as a Linux

A followup to my earlier question - the problems I had with the RH7.1
installer not reading certain RPMs off my CD seem to have cleared up.
(To recap: I have a Gateway P-166Mhz 32M machine with a 10G drive currently
containing RH Linux 6.2. I am trying to upgrade it to 7.1)
I have selected the "upgrade" option for the RedHat install program and
selected nearly all the packages to be included. The installation goes
along fine for about an hour, then things get slower and slower (the hard
drive seems to thrash more and more), and finally I get a "Installation
aborted abnormally" message. Switching to the Debug virtual terminal
(Ctrl-Alt-4), the last line I see is "Out of memory".
Is 32M not enough? The line right BEFORE the "out of memory" one on the
Debug screen says "Adding swap partition: 96468K" so I'm assuming Linux is
trying to also use my 92M swap partition. Is that not enough?
I tried starting the installation with the option "linux mem=32M" at the
"boot:" prompt, but that didn't seem to help.
Does anyone have any other ideas how I might go about upgrading this system
with my limited RAM?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

are you using swapspace? Enable swap before even trying to install.
There is lots of ways to do this. the setup program is the
easiest way. You will need a small swap partition. you make that with
fdisk or cfdisk. this partition MUST exist before you setup your swap.
Trust me on 8MB you are going to NEED that swap! I recommend your swap
be about 16MB or maybe 20MB.
After your swap area is made (I will assume that you set /dev/hda2 up
for swap)
mkswap -c /dev/hda2 # format and check for errors
if none
setup
start with item 1 and go down the list of configuration issues.
including defining and turing on your swapspace!
Now back to the install disks. Each one is a msdos formatted
floppy. EAch floppy hold that disksset's contents. If you REALLY are
adventurous you can.
a. format the disk using mformat a:
copy disk contents say a1 to a formatted floppy in a: with mcopy.
you do not Compress the disk sets (although the contents are *.tgz
files. you copy those AS THEY ARE!

I followed the instructions on the Slackware site, which said to use
either rawrite on DOS, or dd on linux. Neither way worked.
Anyway, as I said, it's moot now, and I since I have a machine that
does what I want to do, I can't afford the time just for the sake of
saying that I got a 486 going.
Thanx, anyway...

Hi,
A 92M swap partition should be large enough for the install. However
RedHat's recommendation from machines with less then 128MB RAM is a 256MB
swap partition. If you were using the graphical install, try using the text
mode install. The 2.4 kernel likes alot of swap space.

To mount a fat floppy:
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
To mount the wndoz drive:
mount -t vfat /dev/hdaX /mnt/point
where the hdaX is the correct device number for the windoz drive and the
/mnt/point is the correct mount point such as /mnt/win98. If you don't
have the win98 mount point you can make it with:
mkdir /mnt/win98
Then run the "mount -t vfat" line above.
When done you need to "umount /mnt/point" for both the floppy and windoz
mount points.

To uninstall from a running linux system do the following.
boot into linux.
login as root
/sbin/lilo -u
fdisk /dev/hda # or sda depending on your hard drive.
delete all linux partitions
quit and save changes
reboot with a DOS/windoz boot disk.
enter: fdisk /MBR
You will need to format the partition or drive back to a DOS/windows
format
Un-install using the installation boot disk
Use the installation boot disk to boot the system and follow through
the install up to the partitioning section. Delete all linux partitions
and then choose the "Back" button and save the changes when asked. Then
reboot the system with a windows boot disk and do a:
fdisk /MBR
You will have to format the disk backto the DOS format.
Or if you want to wipe the drive of all partitions and data then you can
do it with the following command from a running Linux system.
!!!!WARNING!!!!
THIS WILL DELETE ALL PARTITIONS AND
WIPE THE DRIVE CLEAN!!!!
!!!!YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!
To remove all partitions and wipe the drive clean.
cat /dev/zero >/dev/hdX

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I would like to know how to prepare a Linux installation so that if the hard
drive is moved from the primary IDE channel to the secondary IDE channel
doesn't require surgery to re-enable the operating system. The reason for
this is that where I work I often need to move hard drives between different
kinds of systems under test. For physical reasons, the hard drive needs to be
on the primary IDE channel on some of the systems and on the secondary IDE
channel on some of the other systems. This means that in the first case, the
drive letters (in kernel 2.2.x) are /dev/hda*, while in the second case, the
drive letters are /dev/hdc*. This makes both Lilo and the mount command very
unhappy, since the drive letters are hard specified in /etc/lilo.conf and
/etc/fstab. Is it possible to set the system up to get around this
limitation, the way Windows NT/2000 do automatically? (Windows NT/2000 assign
the drive letters the same no matter what IDE channel the hard drive is on --
this would work.) If such a procedure exists, is it going to be different
with kernel 2.4.x?

On 80M hard disk better forget X. Even text based console may have problems as
modern programs like wide spaces. You have to allocate something for swap too.

Its a winmodem. Remove the modem. Get a hammer. Hit the modem. Hit it
again. It not a real modem. Go to the linmodem site, which has some
drivers for one or two winmodems. Mostly, I'de say that you're sol. Get a real modem,
but first check the linux_hardware_compatability_howto at linuxdoc.org.
