Hi all -
I am running kernel 2.4.4 ( installed 2-3 days ago) on an Intel i810
machine w/RH 7.0. I have also installed 100dpi fonts recently and
specified their use in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers. These are the only recent
changes to the system other than some minor tweaks to KDE's
behavior/appearance.
Somewhere along the line, I screwed up my ttys. I boot into runlevel 3
and all is fine. When I run 'startx' or 'kdm', if I try to switch back
to a tty, I get a blank screen and cannot get back to the GUI. When I
ssh into the box, 'ps aux' shows that mingetty is still running on the
apprpriate ttys.
Anyone ever see this before? What causes it and how do you fix it?
Thanks in advance.

First and most important, I'm a newbie.
Now, the problem. I tried to install RedHat 7.1 and I couldn't get into X.
So, I installed 6.2, everything OK, LAN and video. I then upgraded to 7.1.
Now, video is OK, but I get Delaying Eth0 Initialization failed. I've spent
a full day on the web trying things to get it working, but no luck.
In laymens terms, what exactly is happening to cause this? Are there good
links for the laymen to learn how to recompile kernels, the functioning of
modules, etc.

Believe me, his bug reports are no more useful. When half a dozen
different complaints are raised in the one long rant of a report (e.g.
Debian bug #47000), the inclination is to fix something else instead.
'tar cf - ... | ssh remote-host tar xvf -' can be a useful way to get
around scp's (apparent) lack of an escape.

I want to have my two boxes at home able to browse internet pages
simultaneously (ok, as simultaneous as I can get with 1 56kpbs modem).
What I have to work with so far is a winmodem in each box, a 10/100baseTX
LAN card in the linux box, and no LAN card in the windows (98) box. For
the sake of a sensible network, I plan to configure the linux box as a
proxy server, and have a small LAN between the two. The LAN is not a
problem, there is plenty of info on how to do that. What I want to know is
a) how to get the winmodem to work under linux and b) how to configure it
so the proxy server (the linux box) uses the ISP connection to transfer
http/ftp/smtp/pop3/and hopefully soon imap data. Is this at all even
possible? Even if it is not worth it functionally wise (56kpbs is not much
bandwidth), I would like to acieve this as at least a learning experience.

Linux box:
diamond supramax winmodem (conexant v.92 chipset [currently idleing])
linksys LNE etherfast 10/100baseTX (dec tulip chipset [currently works])
hope to set up samba or apache for LAN server to windows box
Windows box:
a generic compaq winmodem (don't know the chipset, don't really care)
no LAN card (these are cheap, plentiful, and well supported in windows)
hope to access internet/email through linux box's ISP connection

Subject: fresh LILO stops at 'L'
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 18:07:50 GMT
Hi!
I just installed RedHat Linux 7.0 from CDROM, the installation went
smoothly, but after the installation, I cannot boot from the fresh
installed HD: LILO stopped at 'L'.
The partition of /dev/hda is as such:
1 8MB /boot
2 128MB /
4 256MB swap
5 15GB /home
6 2.8GB /usr
7 1.2GB /var
LILO installed in MBR of /dev/hda. This a full Linux system, no DOS /
Windows partition at all in the system.
Booting from CDROM works fine, from other HD (a smaller 700MB HD) works
fine, from tomsbrt boot floppy works fine. However, a boot floppy created
using lilo from the /dev/hda failed to boot, also stopped at 'L'.
Here is what I tried:
1. from linux rescue, mount the hda & cd into it, do 'lilo -r . -v
-v',successful, but no boot.
2. do dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=446 count=1 -> hang, then do lilo
again -> stopped at 'L'.
3. format & mkfs a floppy, install lilo on it. boot from floppy, LILO sill
stopped at 'L'.
4. boot from DOS, do 'fdisk /MBR', -> boot stopped with 'partition error'.
Install lilo again, back to 'L'.
Any other ideas? Thanks.

Looking into the /var/log/messages file, and all info on devices at boot up
may tell you something. I found the address of my usb MO, but there is no
assigned name for the device. So I guess the adapter address also is there,
since I have scsi adapter in my system.

That's my point. Things that are "common knowledge" to UNIX admins
aren't necessarily common knowledge to everyone else. If one has only
heard of Linux within the last week, and only installed it yesterday,
then one isn't going to know as much as Peter T. Breuer.
These groups are full of new users, Peter. While your advice might be
beneficial to me and to several other regulars, the majority of Linux
newbies posting and lurking here might as well be sitting in a class
with my old professors. There is nothing more frustrating than being
a freshman undergraduate in a 101- or 102-level class, listening to a
professor who seems to think he's delivering a refresher course to his
fellow Ph.D.'s. That is the situation you put many of these newbies
in.
Don't get me wrong. I've been hanging around c.o.l.* for a while, and
you're one of the most knowledgable people I've seen. You've given me
numerous helpful tips (or given tips to others, which I read and found
applicable). But many of your responses to newbies are less than
helpful -- in fact, some of them go so far over the querent's head
that the poor soul's only options are to become utterly confused, or
to ignore your post entirely (an option made easier by the abrasive
manner in which some of your answers are delivered).
All I'm saying is that you might consider giving some of these people
a break. They want to learn, but that takes time. They don't yet
have the underlying concepts -- these *cannot* be glossed over when
trying to teach them. You just can't jump straight to the advanced
stuff. It will not work.

There is only one X server, 'XFree86', in RedHat 7.1, which uses XFree86
4.0.3. Just configure it with Xconfigurator, xf86config or XF86Setup as
you wish. And run it as 'X' or 'XFree86'.

Eh, Bueller? What's that?
Delaying an interface normally means, that you had the wrong module
loaded - make sure, the correct module is loaded. You can use netcfg (I
think it's called) or linuxconf to configure your network card.

I would recommend running the 'netcfg' utility. Its another utility
for configuring network devices such as ethernet cards. Its pretty
straigtforward. Click on the "interfaces" tab up top then click on the
device that is your ethernet card, click "edit" and set your boot
protocol to be "dhcp". Then "deactivate" and "activate" your device and
you should be all set.
Good luck.
