Subject: how to setup CHAP for a free isp?
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a free isp account, they suply "an small program" to users to login
under w98. When i login the connection box says the CHAP is used, so i went to
linux but realized that
in chap-secrets file the remote name and password are needed, but i have no way
to find them out (the support guys are useless coz they know nothing but
windoze98).
So if i can login under w98 using CHAP, then there must be a way to do it under
linux, right?

Hi.

I am a newbie to linux. I have just installed linux redhat 6.2 and trying to
get on the internate. I have configured kppp to work with my US Robotics 56k
x2 Sportster fax modem. This allows me to get on the net however it takes
2-6 minutes to download any page. So if someone had this problem before
or if someone is using the same model modem, please help.

The model of my modem is 0459.
The Reg # is CJEUSA-24375-M5-E.
It is exteranl and i was told that it is compatible. So i don't know what
the problem is.

I have a sound card with an Aureal chip. I run sndconfig and it says
that it isn't supported. The card has SBPro emulation, so I tried to set up by
doing sndconfig --noprobe. I picked SBPro, and put in the I/O,IRQ,and DMA
numbers that it says in Windoze. (240, 5, 1) Also according to Windoze, there
are no conflicts with any of them. When it tries to test it, I get:

modprobe error
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/sb.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/sb.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/sb.o: insmod sound-slot-0 failed

Also, if I try to connect to the net with KPPP after I do that, it says that
the modem is busy...some kind of conflict that I don't know about? cat
/proc/pci shows nothing on IRQ5. So...can anyone tell me how or get me started
on getting sound in Linux? One less thing that I will have to go into Windoze
for if its fixed. Thanks for any help.

Just don't install as many packages. Leave away XF and Gnome etc.. You
can always add them up later.

I had the same problem, it started when I reduced the number of servers
started using Linuxconf. What I did to fix it was
edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. Linuxconf only edits the StartServers
line, above that is the MinSpareServers and MaxSpareServers. Fix: Make
sure the StartServers number is greater than the MinSpareServers and less
than the MaxSpareServers. The defaults are as follows:

MinSpareServers 5
MaxSpareServers 20
StartServers 8

Read the comments and you will see why these are setup and also why Apache
is a REALLY good system. Also check the MaxClients setting. Hope this
helps.

You need to unexport it before you can unmount it. I don't know the Linux
command to unexport, it might be unshare.

You must know your username and your password.
They may demand that your username be in some special form

This is how I did it:

1) Make sure the debug option is specified when starting pppd (perhaps in
/etc/ppp/options. This will log packets thru syslog (man pppd).

2) Make sure there is a suitable entry in /etc/syslog.conf for facility daemon,
level debug. For example the following extract from my syslog.conf causes
the messages to able to be viewed in xconsole:

   daemon.*;mail.*;\
        news.crit;news.err;news.notice;\
        *.=debug;*.=info;\
        *.=notice;*.=warn |/dev/xconsole

3) Start up xconsole (if that's what you're using to view the messages), then
start pppd to dial to your ISP.

4) You should be able to see the CHAP challenge from the remote host after
the connexion is made. Extract the host name from the message and insert
your username (to the ISP) the remote hostname, and the password you chose
(or your ISP provided) and put these in your chap-secrets file. The remote
host you connect to may vary between sessions. I just added a separate
chap-secrets line for each hostname I saw.

5) Your ISP probably won't authenticate itself, so specify the noauth option
to pppd, use the user option to identify yourself to the ISP, and start
pppd again. You should now be able to authenticate yourself using CHAP.

Subject: LI linux lilo system commander 2000 problem
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 20:14:45 GMT

Hi,
I have system commander 2000 with win98 (2ed) and linux (red hat
installed). The linux failed during install, and I erroneously had not
checked and it put lilo on mbr (which I dont want). I have gone into dos
and done fdisk /mbr, deleted linux partion using sys commander etc. I
dont see a way to edit the mbr, (you could if you wanted to edit
partition table) although Id be intrigued to view the mbr to see where
it has its pointer. If I remove system commander, it boots into windows
fine, when I reinstall it, it still knows about the linux (it must
interrogate the mbr record) as the details say MBR_LILO.DAT, I dont seem
to be able to remove that. I could do a remove from the main menu of
linux but its still in the mbr. Also when I do try to boot the linux
partition (before and after I deleted ) it I get system commander 2000
selection linux and then just a LI (which is very odd) I dont see why I
would get this? Any ideas on this puzzling situation are most welcome.
Please respond to the newsgroup as I check there.

Thanks in advance.

I think I have to add an append parameter to the lilo file in the floppy

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Professor Bruno)
Subject: RAID-1 setup confusion
Date: 24 Jul 2000 20:23:02 GMT

Greetings and apologies from the get-go for bothering you all,

I'm working my way through implementing RAID-1 on my RH6.2 system
and saw that your email gets referenced on the mkraid -f command.

I'm following the latest Software-RAID HOWTO along with the instructions
available from RedHat and have some questions (as well as some
problems implementing this).

Background:
2 P3-450MhZ w/ 512RAM, w/ 2 20GB IDE UDMA66 drives
using latest version of RH6.2 w/ 2.2.14-5smp kernel

First of many confusions:
In establishing a RAID-1 system I'm not sure how to partition
both drives. The partitions which I've put to use on
/dev/hda are below in "Detail 1" all of type ext2, along
with one 127MB partition for Linux swap. Do I set these up
also on /dev/hdb with the same size and tag them "fd" or is there
some other procedure that's necessary here?

If this is clarified then the procedures are pretty straightforward ...
mkraid -f /dev/md0
mkfs /dev/md0
mkdir /storage
mount /dev/md0 /storage

... are fairly clear until we get to making this system bootable and
I'll stick to getting my initial confusion(s) clarified and
then deal with this.

           hda2 * primary DOs win 95 fat 32
           hda3 extended Dos
           hda5 / (root filesystem) logical
           hda7 /tmp logical
           hda8 /var logical
I think that the problem is that the linux partition is extended dos,
to boot from it , it must be a
primary partition , so how to fix this problem?

trow it somewhere in the bootup scripts

for exampler (in redhat): place the "/.../apachectl start" in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local

this should do it.

Subject: fstab problems
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 20:26:48 GMT

Hi:

I'm a Linux newbie who has successfully figured out how to get user
access to my Windows partition and access the Zip drive. The weird thing
is that both drives (and the floppy) are automatically mounted, even
though all have "noauto" in the fstab file. It's not that big a deal
except for the Windows partition, since I don't want to be doing dumb
newbie things in Linux and accdentally wiping out my Windows partition.
So how can I get it to be unmounted until I tell it to mount?

TIA

Tim

Hi Gurus,

Ive a PII 233 MHz Sony Vaio
w/ 4.1 GB hard drive partitioned into 2.5/ntfs, 1/ext2 (linux), .6/fat16

I was able to install linux-mandrake 7.0 on 1G partition

but now when I boot up LILO only gives me two options

I cant start win2000 anymore. I tried adding another entry to lilo but
I dont know what partition (hda, hda1, hda2, hdc... etc) my win2000 is

I have recently acquired Mandrake 7.1 which has a a very good setup. I use
it on my old P150. It has good controllable install etc. and has the latest
drivers.

With two HDD's set up different items on each disk ie
Disk 1: /
Disk 2: /usr /home
