Yes, up2date. You can use up2date freely and on as many systems you want
and as much as you want. The only thing it takes is going to
https://www.redhat.com/network/ and getting a free RHN account.

On Red Hat (which was the system discussed), it's called up2date.

Subject: dcopserver; can't start kde
Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 01:36:30 GMT
Greetings!
Was trying to install kde-2.1.1 and evidently trampled some stuff.
Kde-2.1.1 is not installed and I've tried to backpedal out of a couple of
files that got installed in my abortive attempts. I'm running Mandrake 7.2
going the way of the RPM.
Now when I try to start a KDE session, I get an error about dcopserver not
running and of course the desktop is not functional. (Just running
dcopserver in the background doesn't fix this.)
I would like either to get back to kde-1.9.17 or move forward to
kde-2.1.1.
Help would be appreciated.

Check your hard drive configuration on CMOS/BIOS. Make sure
it is either auto (or consists of the correct parameters of
your hard drive)

PnP is plug-and-pray, but what have you told both OS's regarding the
quality of your monitor. The "generic" label has few choices
a) VGA #this is 640x480
b) SVGA in few categories depending on the ability of the monitor (e.g.
1024x768, 1600x1200 and so on...)
c) If the model number is known AND reported to the OS it will know what
to do.
Check your settings.
Have fun.

I noticed that my Windows with Waterfall Pro (CPU cooler software) keeps
the CPU temperature low. In Linux, it is higher even when idled. I
thought Linux had a CPU cooler code.
Did I miss something? I am a Linux newbie, so hopefully I don't have to
recompile Kernel. I am using RedHat Linux v7.1. I look forward to
receiving replies soon. Thanks! :)

Are you sure it isn't compiling anyway when you get the error? I just
did an LFS system, and gcc complains with ed about using mktemp()
instead of mkstemp() (IIRC), and I don't think it spit it out as
either an error or a warning. It still compiled fine, though.

Subject: Mounting proc filesystem dup2: Bad file descriptor
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 20:09:30 -0700
Hi,
RedHat ~7.0 refuses to mount the virtual files directory /proc during the
initialization script, rc.sysinit at:
action "Mounting /proc filesystem" mount -n -t proc /proc /proc
Past suggestions included "try a naked mount".
The error is always:
Mounting proc filesystem dup2: Bad file descriptor
How do we get the shift shell function to accept 'mount -n -t proc /proc
/proc', but without the quotes? The action funciton in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/functions refuses. Why?
Any help is appreciated!

How did you try to get the mail? local mailbox? POP3?
if you are going to use POP3, you should start pop3 daemon. It's not
sendmail, it's different package (usually imap-?????.rpm).

Hi All,
I was running RedHat linux 6.2 on my laptop and every thing was working fine.
Importantly I could login as any user I wanted to from kdm and I also had
certain directories shared through samba.
I recently upgraded to RedHat 7.1 and I have noticed that I cannot login using
kdm any more. While I was searching this on the net I noted that some posts
say that this is due to pam configuration. I looked at my /etc/pam.d and
indeed there was no kdm or kde file there (There was a samba file tho)..
So I tried various ways to configure this file. I got someone's that works
from the net as they had posted, I tried to copy the contents of login and
passwd to it. etc. but none of that works
I also noticed that the upgrade had backed out my several samba config files
as .rpmsave and I also replaced these with the originals.. But nothing seems
to work.
Here is the contents of my /etc/pam.d/samba file
#%PAM-1.0
auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
account required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
### / end /etc/pam.d/samba
This is the contents of my kdm file (also linked to kde and kcheckpass)
#%PAM-1.0
auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rootok.so
# Uncomment the following line to implicitly trust users in the "wheel" group.
#auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_wheel.so trust use_uid
# Uncomment the following line to require a user to be in the "wheel" group.
#auth required /lib/security/pam_wheel.so use_uid
auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
account required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
password required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
session required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
session optional /lib/security/pam_xauth.so
If someone knows what is going on can you please help me?? BTW. Samba client
works great and I am able to see other windows machines etc.
thanks in advance

Download and install an up-to-date kernel, like linux-2.2.19. Those
older kernels have some serious security problems.

Hi. Someone sent me an e-mail with problems compiling the RedHat 7.0 iBCS.
As follows:

This pertains to my Foxpro 2.6 for Unix FAQ sheet
(www.dennisallen.com/readfpu.txt) showing how to fix a Linux iBCS bug.
According to the user, he did correct the KERNEL= statement in the CONFIG
file. Also executed 'make', then 'make install'.
I have very limited experience with recompiling the iBCS module. Any idea
what's the problem? Is this a problem with loading the old iBCS module and
the new?

# chmod 1770 /home/public/...........
or
"force create mode = 1770" will set the sticky bit and do what you
asked without
the problems associated with setuid and setgid.
