Then don't use the automatic partitioning.
swap can just as well be a logical partition.
DiskDruid always forces weird demands on your system.
I'd use fdisk if I were you, and skip DiskDruid altogether.

Hello,
don't know how RH handles this, but it shouldn't be that different than
SuSE,
which has a file /etc/logfiles:
#
# This file tells cron.daily, which log files have to be watched
#
# File max size mode ownership service
# (reload if
changed)
/var/log/mail +4096k 640 root.root
# apache
/var/log/httpd/access_log +4096k 644 root.root apache
Perhaps, your MTA, whatever you use has to be reloaded in case of
logrotaiting. Mine, doesn't.
Good luck

The order of directories matters in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. The way it's set
here,
your library will be searched last -- try putting /mydir/lib *before* the old value.

Thanks a lot for the reply.
I did try to install using text and followed your advise and the installation went
as far as "Successfully installed and reboot". But when it initialized and went
as far as "Checking new Harware" it came back with "<0>Kernel Panic: Aiee,
killing interrupt handler! Interrupt handler not syncing". I tried removing my
PCMCIA cards and installing it again but I get the same message. Any clue on what
is happening? Maybe Mandrake 8.0 is not for notebooks?

Hi,
I just observed a quite interesting problem.
I have one Linux and Windows 2000 Servers and Windows NT workstation machines.
Whats my problem is, when i start my linux machine before windows 2000 servers..
I could't able to see the work group ( can't open the network neighbour hood to
see all the machines in the network). Its giving an error.. I openened the
event viewer,
I have the message, " The Master Browser has received a server
announcement from the computer 'mycomputername' that believes that it is the
master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip {23303003-9330..}
The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced."
But i can able to see the network neighbour hood of Windows98 and WindowsNT
workstations . Why the windows2000 is not? When I start 1st the windows2000
servers and then Linux, its OK.. No error.
What could be the possible reason, every time am i have to whether windows2000
servers started or not to start my linux...........
Could any one help me out........
thanks in advance,
regards
srinivas.

Well, my card is actually somewhat older. I bought it in 1998, and it has
only 4 MB of RAM (somehow I've never felt that I needed more). Since the
card is already a little old, I can confirm that I have never had any
problems using it with XFree86 4.0.x so far. So I don't think that suddenly
my card can be causing the problems.

According to RedHat, linuxconf is depricated (something like that!) in this
release so it's not part of the install which I found a bit annoying as I
don't run X and there are no other real admin tools (except vi!).
If you want Linuxconf you'll have to download it from

As far as I can see ReiserFS is more advanced than ext2 in a few ways:
* more efficient with small files
* no inode-limit
* journal -> no fsck
> As a consequence of the fact that power can be removed at any time,

ReiserFS might have a slight advantage there, at least the recovery is
faster (not necessarily safer or even safe). And even if the
filesystem is in a consistent state after recovery, your data may not
be :-(
But: ReiserFS is really complex. Source and code is rather large,
computation complexity, too, I think. And it takes about 50 MB of
every partition just for administration (and journaling).

Subject: backup + repartitioning

Hello there,
I'm totally finished with that M$ crap. Win2k killed itself when I
changed monitor refresh rate from 100 to 85Hz. Because I am a long-time
Linux-user I decided to replace it with Linux, which lies already on
some partitions on the same harddisk.
following configuration:
Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 3649 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 3315 26627706 7 HPFS/NTFS (win2k)
/dev/hda2 3316 3339 192780 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 3340 3355 128520 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda4 3356 3649 2361555 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 3356 3373 144553+ 83 Linux (/home)
/dev/hda6 3374 3385 96358+ 83 Linux (/var)
/dev/hda7 3386 3391 48163+ 83 Linux (/root)
/dev/hda8 3392 3649 2072353+ 83 Linux (/usr)
I also have a 8 Gig drive as secondary ide (master), which I use als
extra space for downloads or backups:
/dev/hdc1 5708.35 (FAT32: wintrash space)
/dev/hdc2 2739.02 (ext2: linux space)
It took me several days to optimize my existing linux installation and I
don't want to throw it away. Is there an easy way to clone my existing
installation?
After reinstallation I like to use /dev/hda entirely for Linux. I also
intend to use Oracle 8i Enterprise Server on my Linux box, which has
following disk space requirements:
swap: at least 400MB
server: up to 800MB
client: up to 400MB
additional space for database
can I use more than 1 swap device?
I'd like to use separated partitions for /boot, /home, /root, /var,
/tmp, /usr/src, /usr/local etc., but I have no idea about recommended
partition sizes. Has anyone a idea? Any suggestions are welcome.
Greetings
Alex

even though i'm familiar with Apache i'm not familiar with compiling it.
WIth that said I would guess that you are trying to use the rewrite and
auth_dbm modules but you either don't have them or didn't tell Apache to
use them when it was compiled...so I would comment out those the lines
you list above that start with 'LoadModule'. Then try restarting Apache
and see how things go.

Well i would say: Let your developers rethink their design!I think they
refer to the journaled feature of reiser. They are thinking thet they
will never have a chance to get a corrupted filesystems and speed up in
power up.
To say it simple, yes you will have a speed up in filesystem check
No you will have also a chance to get a corrupted filesystem, especially
in an embedded design where power loss doesnt mean complete power loss !
there is anything in between possible
