Add this to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 just below the
"PAPNAME=" line like this.

PAPNAME=ISP_username_goes_here
PEERDNS=no

Then you can also protect it from being changed with "chattr +i"

 chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf /etc/ppp/resolv.conf

Hi,

I'm an absolute linux newbie so I need some help in getting my fresh
Mandrake 8.0 installation to work.
My problem is this:
I have one win 98 box as a router which has been working as it should
for a long time. I converted another box from win me to mandrake 8.0. I
have configured my network card ( realtek based ) the exact same way I
did in win me ( same ip, same gateway, same network mask ) and when I
check the logs I can see that the netcard module loads correctly.
However when I ping the gateway I get a "destination host unreachable"
message... I double checked by replacing the net card with an old 3Com
509 ( which also loaded correctly ) but I get exactly the same message.
Does anyone have a clue what's causing this?

NetBIOS can run on both netbeui, ipx/spx and tcp/ip. Linux in itself
does not participate in browser election, but samba does.

Probably samba is trying to become master browser. If you don't want
this, you should be able to fix it by putting:

os level = 0
preferred master = 0
local master = 0
domain master = 0

in smb.conf.

for RH, I've always found that the mkisofs RPM is sufficient.  As for what you have,
I would look in the directory that untargzipping created for a README or INSTALL file,
and follow the instructions there.

You say you are running a Win98 box as a router.  Is it using ICS or some
sort of proxy?  If using ICS (internet connection sharing) did you set up
Linux to use dhcp to get its ethernet?  Does the gateway on the Linux box
end up set to the LAN IP of the Win box (the UG route in 'route -n')?

It would be better to use the Linux box as router, since it is much more
capable and configurable for masquerading and firewalling a LAN.

And what is your routing information like? Show the output of
/sbin/ifconfig and /sbin/route -n, and people will be able to help you.

Make sure that the boot floppy is absolutely perfect with no bad sectors 
('format a: /u' and then rawrite it again when booted to DOS from Win 
floppy).  The boot floppy I got with Mandrake 7.0 was defective and I had 
to make my own.  Is your cdrom internal or external?

I'm using WinRoute as the routing software. Once WinRoute has been installed
I need only set the WinRoute machine's ip address as the default gateway on
all machines on the network.
I've check the UG entry with route and it reports

Not sure what you mean by 'domain1.com and domain2.com', does each use 
something other than the system password file?  Does your imap or pop3 
program know how to tell which password file to use, based on what?

The pop3 or imap server does not have a clue what hostname you are using
to access it, all it knows is username, (crypted) system password, the IP
you are connecting from and maybe the IP you are connecting to.  When you
realize that, the solution is simply to not have the same username on more
than 1 virtual domain.  And when someone connects to get their mail, it 
does not matter if they use the main box hostname, or their own virtual 
hostname, as long as DNS points both to the same IP.

Hi, I am having problems configuring my mouse to work in XFree. I am running
Debian on a Dell Inspirion 7500. I used to be able to get my touch pad to
work, but now it will not. I have even set everything the same as it was
when it worked. The problem might be the Mach64 server I had to get all set
up to get the display to work at higher resolutions. I got the display off
of the Linux Laptop page. I am trying to get either my touch pad, or my
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer to work. Any help will be appreciated.

I recently installed Mandrake 7.2 (because 8.0 sucks) and
I'm now finding myself stuck with this annoying red graphic
box that pops up when lilo shows up. It basically is just
a menu with all of the boot options. However, in the past
I just had my lilo.message pop up and I'm still perfectly
happy with that. How can I get rid of that graphic? I'm
assuming it's some line to my lilo.conf file that will
do it.

I'm running XFree 3.3.6, although this also happens to me
with 4.0.x. I would normally use 'xset dpms 300 0 1200'
to control the blanking and power-off of my monitor. It
works great, but if I go 'xset -dpms' or 'xset dpms 0 0 0',
my monitor won't turn off, but it still blanks after
5 minutes. This is weird! Anybody know what could be
the cause of this? Please let me know if there is any additional
information that you'd like me to provide.

For all both discouraged users I would say I agree about Mandrake but kind
of disagree about Linux.  Try RH or SuSE distros instead.  MS has similiar
problems to Linux and you'd pay a fortune for the same WinX software found
in Linux.  While Win is still my boss, if I was looking for a mostly email,
web browser and occasional office work machine then I would have no problem
using only Linux.

I've found that I can use generic drivers to cure my X-window woes.  It's
really not much more work than Windows to operate.  And I just love
installing software or change a configuration and not have to reboot my
Linux box.

default route is gatewayed through a router local to the eth0 interface.

There is nothing wrong with this setup. You haven't tried to use it yet
(according to ifconfig - no TX packets even attempted), and it has
received no packets on the wire either (no RX packets of any sort).

Show the result of ifconfig after a "ping -c 1 192.168.1.1". I suspect it
is working fine.

What is the card? It is strange that it is on IRQ 5. That is normally a
soundcard IRQ, and an ISA IRQ practically always. ISA NICs are
practically unavailable, so I am suspicious that the hardware is
misconfigured so as to have an IRQ conflict. The IRQ/IO choice is
appropriate for a 3c509, I think, and possibly a NE2000, and is slap
bang on the IRQ/IO that I'd expect for an ISA CL soundblaster. You
may have forgotten to configure a SB or the NIC via PnP. Or, if
it is a 3c509, you may have forgotten to disable PnP on the card,
etc. ...
