I un-installed Xcdroast completely, then cleaned up all directories with
references to Xcdroast .....Re-installed Xcdroast exactly per instructions
but still get same results....The CDRW can read everything fine, it is
recognized by cdrecord -scanbus just fine, it goes thru the motions while
running Xcdroast, but for some reason it doesn't turn on the laser to burn
a CD(?)........I'm just about at the point of giving up....Maybe there is a
some kind of hardware issue with the Acer 8432A CDRW and I'm just beating
my brains out over a losing battle...............Thanks much for your
assistance !

Well, one can download i810 drivers from intel and I think that you could do
this for the 3.3.6 release. From what you say, Michael, the intel 810
drivers appear to now be included in the X4.0.3 release? I could swear
during my days of using redhat; perhaps 6.2; I used some drivers from
intel's website which had been released in rpm format.
I believe that Linuxcare has certified this version of redhat on an optiplex
110. Check out the labs stuff off of www.linuxcare.com. Here is an excerpt
at http://www.linuxcare.com/labs/certs/gx110.epl. It discusses using redhat
6.2 OEM which is basically about the same as RedHat 6.2 except for perhaps
some bundled rpm files from dell.
Here is some stuff which shows the chipset and its successful configuration:
X-info:
XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System
Release Date: January 8 2000
(**) SVGA: Graphics device ID: "My Video
Card"

(**) SVGA: Using 16 bpp, Depth 16, Color
weight: 565
(**) SVGA: Mode "1024x768": mode clock =

So, I would check out their website for details on configuring this
particular video card. See the reference to the 810?
When you want to see how to set up a dell system with redhat; especially a
workstation or laptop or desktop, check out Linuxcare's certification pages.
Lots of good details there.

If you want to do it the way SuSE thinks you should do it, then probably
you should use yast2. You could also install the neccessary also driver by
hand, or use the emu10k1 driver that comes with the kernel (should be there
as a module for use with the standard SuSE kernel, otherwise re-compile
your kernel with the emu10k1 driver compiled in).

The classical answer is: Boot a DOS floppy and do: fdisk /mbr
But, I have to ask, what is a LILO/GRUB? Is that like a Word/Access?

This is correct for preconfigured systems, as these are usually
PCI winmodems. That doesn't mean, however, that there aren't ISA
winmodems as well - which is what I was commenting on.

Every modem will hang sooner or later. Sometimes they get stuck in
an unresponsive stade which will force you to switch them off/on
to get it back to life. There's no modem that will work 100%
reliably over an unspecified amout of time. It is especially
annoying if you run a modem pool for dialup users.

If you are running a recent version of lilo, there is a symlink from
/boot/boot.b to /boot/boot.menu.b. Change it to point to /boot.text.b,
make sure your lilo.conf looks good and rerun lilo.

Never mind - this is a non-issue. The thing is completely hot-swappable in
Linux - no "Manager" needed - as long as the usual mount/umount
procedures/protocols are observed.

OK - what you are trying to do is to clone an existing system - which is
very different from installing a new one (which is what most of the chatter
in this NG is about).
It turns out this is quite easy to do, assuming that you have a network
connection between the two machines. I've done this sort of thing several
times, using ethernet. To do it with only serial or parallel is something I
haven't done, but I assume if you can get SLIP or PLIP going, then it works
out the same (a friend of mine has done this once using PLIP).
Anyway, once you have the ext2fs partition setup and a working TCPIP
connection between the two machines, the neat way to do it is this:
1) On the target machine, do:
cd /mnt;netcat -l -p 2000 | cpio -idvum
2) On the source machine, do:
find / -xdev | cpio -ova -H crc | netcat -w 10 othermachine 2000
netcat is cool...
After this is done, you get to play with LILO.

OK, that's correct. Your card is at least working right on your side of
the fence. It looks fine.
> collisions:0 txqueuelen:100

Now all you have to check is (a) if the card can receive, and (b), if
those packets that the card thinks it transmitted really went out on
the wire.
For (a), run tcpdump, and ping the machine from somewhere else. You
should see the packets flying by on the wire. For (b), see if the lights
on the hub flash when you ping out to 192.161.1.1.

Provided it really IS there, and that's not just where you THINK it is.

Why disable pnp on the nic? That is only the standard procedure on
3c509's, and you haven't said if you have a 3c509 or not ...! Besides,
even 3c509s have occasionally been known to be configurable via isapnp
(it's just pot luck, but when they work, they work).

I forget if I got the 810 add-on from intel. I seem to recall that I

I have a vagure recollection of possibly dropping some source into

You will need to check to make sure that Apache is configured within the
various runlevels, although if Apache was installed by default, it should be
in the various run levels. You might want to check to make sure that Apache
isn't already starting up but is failing as a result of a configuration
parameter. You might need to refer to the error_log to see whether or not
there is an error.
