Eventually you should upgrade the entire system (it's free and it gets
everythign up to date and spiffy), but it's not necessary.

There should be a kernel howto at http://www.linuxdoc.org

This is a "<toor>" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> scroll! it says:

check the 3com website and see if they list the location of the linux
driver. You might have to download the latest. you might also try the
most recent kernel and see if that helps any.

an aside: Technically everything is compatible with linux, alls it
needs is a driver.... Just because someone has a driver, it doesn't
mean that they have released it GPL, and if they do not do that they
will need someone to constantly keep the driver up to date with the
latest kernel (a full time job). If they do release it GPL then it just
gets integrated into the kernel and it gets automagically updated. Lots
of companies claim to have a linux driver, but if it's not an open
source driver it's nearly worthless.

IIRC, your lilo.conf entry for a windows system has keywords that are
not in the linux ones. look for a howto on dual booting into windows to
see the exact setup.

as far as i remember, i've put it into the MBR of the SCSI drive.
If I switch to "Boot from HDD-0" (the IDE drive) in the BIOS, the Win2k boot

Is that a serious question? Sure I had a look at it and entered several
options like (B and )B. I believe )B is the default (after installation)
value, but apparently doesn't seem to be correct anymore. Oh, just a bit
more information, I ran the online update a few days ago (before the
nightmare began).

So, anyone a serious solution? I'd be a happy person :)

as a followup to my own post, if you're in a high security setting you
shouldn't be logging in as root, so it's probably not going to show the

Put "vga=ask" into /etc/lilo.conf somewhere before the images list then
rerun lilo. Next time you boot, you'll get a list of available text modes.
Choose one and note its number. When you find one you like, change the
"vga=" line to that number to make it automatic. (e.g.: mine looks like
this "vga=0x030a").

For colors, this is easy to do for directory listings. "ls --color" will
give a color listing. Any option to ls you want to use all the time can be
put in the env. variable LS_OPTIONS. Another thing that's relatively easy
to colorize is your prompt. Check out
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Bash-Prompt-HOWTO.html
for all the gory details.

Another stupid question: how do I determine if I have TCP Wrappers
installed. I did a find -name tcpd.h and didn't find anything.

No, I am not sure at all. I have just heard, that making a smaller
kernel helped. gcc 2.96 from 7.1 is rumoured to be usable for compiling
kernels - but is that the one, you are using?
