Subject: Installing RH 7.1 on Compaq Proliant 1500 with disk array (RAID 5)
Date: 26 May 2001 19:23:33 GMT

Hi all,

this is a question about installing RH 7.1 from CD-ROM using a boot floopy
(boot.img)

I'm this far in the process:

1) Disk array configured as one logical disk under RAID 5 (with the Compaq
sw).

2) RH 7.1 boot disk in the A-drive

3) The mem=48M@16M command makes the Anaconda program run in text mode and
not crash due to "insufficient memory" (as is the case Anaconda it does not
get this extra parameter)

4) I'm then selecting language, packages etc. and everything seems to be
running until suddenly:

unmounting filesystems...
/mnt/sysimage/boot
/mnt/sysimage/home failed ()

The screen colors are messed up at this point and the power cycle switch is
the only way to proceed.

I've checked this page:

http://www.geocities.com/rlcomp_1999/

but I've not found the missing piece for the puzzle yet.

Can you provide a hint for me?

Best regards,
Niels Kr. Jensen
Denmark.

i downloaded grub 0.5.96 uncompressed it then typed:

./configure
make
make install

all of the commands appeared to work, but when i type grub it displays
version number 0.5.93.1 and some of the commads that are in the instuctions
do not work ie "setup (fd0)" ... the tar file is in the /root/tmp/
directory... i did think this would matter, but i thought i would include it

Subject: Dual Boot Help
Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 15:53:07 -0400

Help!
I currently have a dual boot W2K/RH7 machine on which I have to use a boot
floppy or change my boot order in my BIOS to boot into Linux . The problem
is I have W2K installed on a Highpoint 370 IDE RAID controller running RAID
0. There are no drivers for the RAID controller for Linux except minimal IDE
controller functionality which doesn't help my situation since I'm running
RAID. RH7 is installed on another HDD, (hda3). I would like to use NT boot
loader to dual boot because I don't think there is anyway to point LILO at
my W2K installation since its essentially an unrecognized device. Here is
what I have tried to get this working:

First I configured LILO to a known working condition and installed to hda.(I
can boot into Linux if hda is before my RAID drive in the BIOS boot order).
While in Linux I ran the following command:
dd if=/dev/hda of=/mnt/floppy/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

Then I booted back into W2K saved bootsect.lnx to c:\ and added the
following line to c:\boot.ini :
c:\bootsect.lnx="RedHat 7.0"

Now when I select "RedHat 7.0" the screen is cleared and in the top right
corner "LI" is printed as though cut off from printing "LILO:"

I have also tried this same thing only installing LILO to hda3 and changing
the "dd" command appropriately and updating the file in windows, with the
same results.

If anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, or another method of
accomplishing my goal I would really appreciate it.

Thank You,
-belac

Hola.

I've installed RH 7.1, but had problems getting linuxconf to work. It
was telling me that /dev/dsp was busy.

In a beer inspired act of stupidity, I deleted /dev/dsp.

Since I have no information on what the device should look like, I
need help.

What are the parameters for mknod to re-create the device?

Thanks. In the future, I promise not to su under the influence (SUI,

I do not have the original post, so here is my answer. Another case
with wrong partition ID. The type of the extended partition should be
0F. The data which should be in hda7, actually is inside one of the
other partitions.

Subject: remote boot
Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 22:56:48 +0200

Hi

I have a PPro 200 with an Intel Etherexpress 10/100 card. The box does
not have a harddisk right now and the floppy drive is broken.

Until I get it fixed, I would like to fiddle with some remote booting.
The ethercard has a bootprom with Intel PXE Agent 2.1.

So I configured my dhcp-server to give a bootfilename and IP
information. That is fine and the bootprom retrieves the kernel image (a
bzImage) from the tftp-server.

And now my problem arizes: Apparently it cannot boot the kernel. The
floppy drive goes nuts and just keep running and the string "4000" is
just printed endlessly on the screen. I tried disconnecting the floppy
drive (it heads for the trashcan anyway), but that does not help (of
course it does not go nuts anymore :)

I have tried with both 2.4 kernels and 2.2 kernels, but they give the
same result.

What am I doing wrong? Do I have to set up a PXE server? I don't need
fancy PXE boot menus or possibility to boot different kernels - just the
ability to retreive a kernel image and boot it...

TIA

Rasmus

Yes, but if mke2fs already started to mess with the partition in question,
then a good deal of data on there may already have been deleted and
recreating it is probably not so easy. In fact, I don't know if it's at all
possible to recreate the data stored on a partition that you have run
mke2fs on...

Either it tries to mount the wrong partition or you do not have support
for the root media (scsi disk + scsi card) in the kernel.

If you know your root partition, try to boot with
'linux root=/dev/yourdevice' at the lilo pronpt. Else you will have to
compile / install a kernel with support for scsi disks and your scsi
adapter.

I did select the initio 9100 scsi driver during the compilation process.
Does anyone know hwo to get it to work? thanks!

Btw, it works fine with kernel 2.2.18!!! thanks!!

Is it giving problems? Most PCI devices share IRQ's without problems.

But you will probably have to mess with your BIOS if you want to change
