Just wondering about best practice re. blocksize.
I've noticed that the undefined (by user) blocksize following a mke2fs
operation, has been increased from 1024 to 4096 bits, which my e2defrag
program doesn't like at all. Defragging aside, what's the best blocksize
to define with the '-b' mke2fs option?.
Is the optimum size 1024, 2048 or 4096?.
Comments or directions to suitable reference material most welcome.

Hi,
I am new to linux. any advice is appreciated.
I have installed Windows 2000 professional &
linux ManDrake 7.2 in my PC(two hard disks with
1st one for win2000, 2nd one for linux).
I use TECOM IAS-RT box to connect to Internet.
(every resident shares the server installed in
the basement in my community. I think the connnection
flow is: PC -> RT-box -(phone line)-> shared server
-> DSL -> internet)
It works fine in win2000, the setup is quite the
same as dialup with modem, but with no need to specify
phone number, login id, password(RT-box is physically
connected to server, no phone number is needed).
The COM1 is used for RT-box and I've tried to setup for
RT-box in linux(with graphic Mandrake config tool). the
error message always says "your system is not connected
to internet" --> it fails to detect the RT-box in COM1 ???
or it needs to specify something special ???
any advice is appreicated.

I don't know why you can't defrag your D:, but I can tell you that fips has
only one purpose. Fips is used to save your current Windows setup and all
the data, and leave the remaining (empty) space on your harddrive in a
separate partition. When you install Linux, you can use Disk Druid to
delete that partition (of empty space), and, at the same time, add (or
create), the linux partitions (Disk Druid prompts you to "reformat" the new
partitions at the time of creation). A minimum setup would be to add 3
linux partitions...boot, root, and swap.
What do you have on D:?
Which windows are you using?
What linux will you be installing?
Are you planning to dual boot with windows?

Apparently it is your timestamp routine that has a problem. You still
failed to mention ownership, permissions or programming language of
timestamp. For testing this works perfectly for me:
* * * * * /root/crontest
#!/bin/bash
#/root/crontest 700 permission
SRC_FILE=/home/efflandt/stuff/something.txt
DST_FILE=`/home/efflandt/timestamp /Archives/archive-%H:%M:%S.tar`
LOG=/home/efflandt/archive.log
echo "`/bin/date` creating archive: $DST_FILE" >> $LOG
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
# /home/efflandt/timestamp 755 permission
use POSIX;
my $filespec = shift;
print POSIX::strftime("$filespec",localtime);
Sample /home/efflandt/archive.log with 646 permission:
Sun Jun 3 10:52:01 CDT 2001 creating archive: /Archives/archive-10:52:01.tar
Sun Jun 3 10:53:00 CDT 2001 creating archive: /Archives/archive-10:53:00.tar
Sun Jun 3 10:54:01 CDT 2001 creating archive: /Archives/archive-10:54:01.tar
Note that colons in filenames may be problematic if you ever try to copy
them with scp or rcp since colons have special meaning to those commands.

Open a terminal window, type
su -
(you are asked for the root password) and then:
ln -sf /dev/input/ttyACM0 /dev/modem
to create a symbolic link /dev/modem -> /dev/input/ttyACM0
Then you can choose /dev/modem from the list in kppp or draknet.
(And write a mail to the maintainers why the **** it doesn't appear in
the list by default.)

Yep. It will give you some information about your modem in
/proc/bus/usb/. Your modem will work without it - if it is supported.
If the stuff in /proc/bus/usb/devices doesn't look like the example in
acm.txt, the modem won't work with the acm driver.

Does anyone got the microphone for Philips Vesta pro Webcam working

I loaded both the pwc and audio module on a MDK8 with kernel 2.4.4-6.
The video works very well but not the microphone. :-((
A external microphone plugged in my SB Live value soundcard is
functionning perfectly well on /dev/dsp. I tried /dev/dsp1 for the
integrated microphone but with no result. I also created /dev/dsp2, 3
and 4 but they do not work either...
On /dev/dsp2 I have the following error message : ioctl set dupleix :

Using some type of hardware capture card to take video signals from

Any suggested hardware video capture cards and software to use. Any

An error message like this one doesn't matter:

If the graphical installer doesn't work, check that there's no broken

Subject: linux dual boot problem
Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 17:48:40 GMT
I have just installed Red Hat 7.0 on my machine and I am having problems
setting up a dual boot. I have a 6.4gig HD with Windows98 on it (hda),
and a new 20gig HD (hdb) which I partitioned with Disk Druid to use as a
Linux disk. During the installation I did not specify anything to do
with the first (Windows) disk, i.e. I didn't specify any partitions of
any type on it, and now I cannot seem to get anything to recognize that
there is anything on it.
When I used the command "fdisk -l /dev/hda" it lists the sectors etc.
but does not list any partitions after it prints out the headers for the
list. I have tried to mount the disk in Linux but this does not work.
Is there a way I can fix the first disk using fdisk or Partition Magic
so that it is recognized without erasing all of the data I have on it?
I would be grateful for any assistance.
Thanks.

Here is one of my RH 6.2 systems partition scheme it is from a 9.1GB
disk. You might notice that the /usr partition is almost full. If/When I
reinstall I would increase the /usr partition to somewhere around 2 to
2.5 GB which would give me a little extra room. There are no set rules
for partition or sizes, it is more of what you need or want to use the
system for.

A couple of days ago my Red Hat 7.1 system froze up. Neither
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace nor Ctrl-Alt-Delete had any effect, so
I had to do a hard reboot. The system stopped on the next boot
with an error message about inconsistencies in the root file
system. (The root partition inludes everything except /usr.)
I ran fsck, which fixed some errors and put something
in lost+found.
After that the system started booting again. Some things are
a little flakey, but I don't have any reason to believe that's a result
of the disk problem. Every Linux system I've ever used has
been flakey and somewhat unreliable. What I'm worried about
here is the possibility of something more serious.
My question is, can I trust this system anymore? Is it likely
that there are still damaged files on the root partition that
could cause a serious problem at some point? For instance,
is it likely that whatever was put in lost+found is part of an
important file that is now damaged?
Thanks
