I was just out of town for two days, so I will try to answer all of
these posts simultaneously.
1. I checked the interrupts. There is indeed a PS/2 Mouse on
interrupt 12. However, I don't know if it's referring to my pointer
or the external mouse I plugged in. I believe that you are correct
and both the pointer and the external mouse try to grab interrupt 12
and only one of them gets it. Is it possible to maybe change the
interrupt for one of them or should I just not mess with this setting
and leave it alone? I'm just being really picky. I love mandrake now
that I got my sound to work :)
2. I actually also own a toshiba laptop and it does indeed have a
setting that allows both the pointer and an external mouse to be used
simultaneously. However, I cannot find such an option on my IBM
Thinkpad. Maybe it's hardware dependant?
Thanks for everyone's help.

Subject: LPD configuration problem
Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 04:23:20 GMT
Hi,
I have a dot matrix printer attached to a linux box running RedHat 6.2. I
can print fine to the printer from this box. I have setup two other Linux
boxes with the intent to send send all print jobs to the first box. On the
other two boxes the print jobs spool and then queue fine, but then the print
daemon hangs.
Now, I have created the spool directory (/var/spool/lpd/lp) with the daemon
the owner and the group. I did this on all the Linux machines.
I also created on the linux printer server the hosts.lpd file to allow the
other boxes to print.
On one of the boxes I get the following error:
stud: waiting for queue to enabled on grumpy
(the listing of the what is in the queue on stud is listed here)
grumpy: lpd: lp: Host name for your address 192.168.1.5 unknown
Now, I put both host name and ip address in the hosts.lpd file on grumpy
(the printe server). Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Trevor

Any reason you didn't just use printtool?

It still sounds like the print server doesn't have any
way to resolve the address of the box trying to
print to it -
You have a few choices: hosts, dns, nis....
Pick one, or pick several, but if you are going
to run network services, name resolution needs
to be working.

The lilo.conf is like that because Iwas prepaing the system for multiboot

I found a version on the SMC web site. It was actually two modules,
lacp.o and 9462.o.

> dependency.
> "insmod -f <filename>" should do it. If it is just a version mis-match

When I did that, and I set up eth0 and try to ping my router, I get a
kernel panic (including something like "Aiee - killing interrupt
handler").
SMC sent me yet another version (smc9462.o), one that was supposed to be
on the disk, but it had the same version issue, and also some unresolved
symbols. I'm going to try the 2.4 version but I suppose it won't work on
a 2.2 kernel.
Brief overview
Debian 2.2.19pre17
Supplied diskette:
no 'Linux' folder
Phone tech-support emailed:
* "SMC9462.O" -- apparently 2.0 kernel version, large number of
missing symbols
* Source code -- compiled, insmod gave missing __bad_udelay symbol.
The same source code (at least, the main .c file) is all that can be
found on their US web-site.
* Source code + no-op __bad_udelay -- insmod gave "device busy"
message
SMC's European web-site:
<http://www.smc-europe.com/support/software/pci/middlebottomright.htm>
* two modules, "lacp.o" and "9462tx.o" -- insmod gave kernel version
complaint for both. Doing insmod -f lead to kernel panic when I set up
eth0 and pinged my router. This is the closest I've got.
Website tech-support emailed:
* A 'correct' disk contents including a Linux folder with 2.2 and
2.4 versions. Each a single module, "smc9462.o". Same version issue for
2.2. Doing insmod -f gave a number of missing symbols. If I had the
source to this one maybe I could fix the problem...

Subject: moving from HDB to Taylor UUCP - information on ADVANCED setup available?
Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 23:41:13 -0700
Does anyone know where I can find ADVANCED configuration assistance with
Taylor UUCP? I'm moving from HDB on SCO Unix to Taylor on Red Hat Linux and
need to mimic functionality from old systems. Among the things I need to be
able to do:
Create modem hunt groups and specify a maximum number of modems that can be
used for dialing out. The file I currently use for setting maximums is
/usr/lib/uucp/Maxuuscheds.
Have uucp automatically handle the dialing out to other locations. I need
to be able to simply run:
'uucp /tmp/filename systemname\!/tmp/endfilename' and let automated
processes handle the calling, specifically the retries if it doesn't connect
on the first try. HDB on SCO is configurable (through uucp's cron) so that
each minute, if the maximum number of used modems hasn't been reached and
there is a job that needs to be sent that has reached its retry time, the
call will be initiated. This is controlled by a cron entry which uses
/usr/lib/uucp/uusched on our SCO boxes.
I'd greatly appreciate any help... all howtos and explainations I've found
are elementary. I have hundreds of Linux boxes running uucp through single
modems, but need to start using one as the 'hub' of communications. Thanks
in advance,
Steve

No. I'd need to see the error. It's possible that you also have to
specify where or which the loader is in this case. It should be
loader=/boot/something.b
Try the possibilities.
loader=chain-loader
This specifies the chain loader that should be
used. By default /boot/chain.b is used. The chain
loader must be specified if booting from a device
other than the first hard or floppy disk.

The lilo.conf man page, and the lilo docs. Also, looking up the error
from lilo in the lilo docs. I'd guess you're not telling me that you
have a section talking about an msdos partition, and that there's
something wrong there, not in the part you've shown.

You must start with a rescue disk or with the Red Hat CD in "rescue"
mode. When you have Linux working, you can re-install Lilo typing
"lilo" at the prompt (you must be root for this).

Okay. The "something like that" is no good.
Show the *exact* error message please.
00:80 is not sda. 08:00 is though. What did it say?

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this lilo.conf.
But anyway, you got as far as booting the kernel, so LILO no
longer is involved. I fail to see who pressing enter can have
the effect you describe, unless the enter is somehow taken as an argument
to the kernel. Did you edit this lilo.conf from windows? Are there
any control characters in it? Use eg. vi and make a new lilo.conf.
Make sure no control characters are in.

No. This usually means you have a win stanza refering to hdb5 or something
like that.
Post your full lilo.conf here, and the resault of `/sbin/fdisk -l
/dev/hd[ab]`

I can't offer any advice on what would cause the clock to run so fast, but
to deal with it you could always make a cron job that contains the command
"hwclock --hctosys" to set system time off the hardware clock, which you
claim to be accurate. That would at least prevent it from drifting off so
much while you try to figure out what's really going on.
