OK, Guys, I finally got it fixed last night and am able to dual-boot
Win98/Linux RH7.1 now.
Thank vvm to all helpful advice. My salute to you all :-)
Herebelow are steps carried out last night :
1) hdb's 2nd partition: Changed partition type from 05 (extended) to
85x (linux extension)
2) hda's 1st partition: Changed partition type from 0bx (Win95 FAT32)
to 0cx (Win 95 FAT32 LBA)
3) Zeroed the first 512 bytes of hda1 partition with dd command as
follows:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda1 bs=512 count=1
4) Booted the PC with Win98 StartUp diskette and execute "sys c:"
Thanks again for making me look like a BIG hero at home :-)

When responding to a zone transfer request from a slave server, it can
either send one answer for each record in the zone, or it can batch them up
with many records in each answer section. Only BIND 8.1 and higher
understand the many-answers format.

Well here is my lilo.conf that I am using on hda:
lba32
boot=/dev/hda
install=/boot/boot.b
map=/boot/map
delay=30
vga=normal
# append=""
image=/boot/2.2.19pre17-idepci --

running lilo gives me this:
Fatal: open /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14: No such file or directory
I tried:
image=/dev/hdb2/vmlinuz-2.2.14
label=redhat
root=/dev/hdb5
read-only
running lilo gives me:
Fatal: open /dev/hdb2/vmlinuz-2.2.14: Not a directory
I've tried something like this:
other=/dev/hdb5(or hdb2)
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14
label=redhat
table=/dev/hdb
lilo says:
Fatal: First sector of /dev/hdb5 [(or hdb2)] doesn't have a valid boot
signature
Again on hda I have one linux system, on hdb I have Windows(hdb1) and linux.
I also have LILO installed in the MBR on hdb.
Any ideas? Thanks...

Subject: RH7.1 and SoundBlaster Live!

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Although I've been a unix user for 16 years (sysV,SunOS,Solaris), I
just got up enough nerve to install linux on my machine at home.
(In other words, I'm an experienced unix *user*, but a linux and
admin newbie.)
I successfully installed RH7.1 (dual boot with WinME) and am gradually
getting all the pieces working.
Time for my first venture in seeking help from the usenet community!
Problem:
I have been unable to get sound out of the SoundBlaster Live! card.
Specifics:
(The card works just fine with the WinME boot, so it's not a hardware
failure...)
I ran sndconfig -- it detected the card just fine. But when it
plays a sample, no sound comes out.
I ran two different mixer programs (under Gnome), and made sure that
nothing was muted and volumes were turned up. Still no sound.
(I have also rebooted to no avail :0<)
Based on advice from searches in newsgroups and linux sites, I
checked /proc/pci, /proc/interrupts, /proc/iports, /proc/dma.
The IRQ and I/O Range settings are the same as those that show
up when I check the device drivers in windows. (IRQ=9, I/O Range EFAO-EFAF).
Still, I cannot get any sound with linux :o<
Here are a some particulars that may or may not be of help:
1) Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! (series WDM)
(hardware version 007)
2) AMD Athlon 1GHz processor (Gateway machine) with 256MB RAM
3) the winmodem (some sort of home networking/modem combo card) also
uses IRQ=9 -- I don't use the home networking features, since I
also have an ethernet card installed. Of course, the winmodem
doesn't work with linux and I have little hope for ever getting
it to work. Even though the same IRQ is used, both the modem
and the sound card work just fine with WinME.
4) Nvdia GeForce2 video card (the Soundblaster card sits next to the
video card, the modem is a few slots over)
5) anything else I haven't mentioned here that is important?
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Try deleting the .Xauthority file in your home directory, for user tommy =

I have the same sound chip on my extra athlon board running mandrake
8 and it installs the sound drivers w/out errors even the sound mixer
works properly. When I get home from work I will look and see what
modules are being loaded for this device, although I do now that the
newest kernel (2.4.5) has support for it. You might want to look at
recompiling the kernel and have the device compiled in and not a
module. Also look at the file /var/log/messages for a more accurate
error of whats going on, post the portion of the file to this thread
as it will help trouble shoot your problem.

I just tried this as a second stanza again but only this time I put
vmlinuz-2.2.14 into the boot directory on hda/master drive. Lilo accepted the
configuration but the system that was brought up was pretty confused.
So that didn't work.

It looks like you need to install X11 again for some reason:
[Insert CD 1]
mount /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
rpm --force -Uvh ./XFree86*
cd /root
umount /mnt/cdrom
Xconfigurator
[Remove CD 1]
You don't need to install all the XFree86 packages, but it can't hurt
(you'll get extra fonts, like japanese and such) and I wouldn't worry
about it unless space is a big issue. Xconfigurator should
auto-detect everything for you. Good luck!

At least, AFAICT. But now I'm curious - what distros /don't/ use
SysV's init? I've never liked the fact that I had to download certain
things from UNIX-sites when I'm building a Linux setup from

Boot up with a DOS or Windows 9x boot disk. At the DOS prompt type:
fdisk /mbr
That should erase LILO from your master boot record.

No gaurantee, but something you just might try. Since how you don't have any
system, I guess, you will need to boot up with an emergency disk. You do have
one don't you? One with Linux or Windows would work. This is a perfect
scenario for when you do need one. It would provide a way to at least
manipulate your hardware to an extent. Anyway, run FDISK with the switch
/mbr. Its possible that you installed LILO in the mbr and never put back the
DOS boot loader and Windows is freaked out about that.

In your BIOS setup, there is usually a setting like
PnP OS Installed = Yes
Change that to 'No' and see if it fixes the problem.

You need to unload ipchains and then load ip_tables:
rmmod ipchains
modprobe ip_tables
You can't use both at the same time, AFAIK.

ok ok ok,
I'VE ALMOST GOT IT! the modem worked correctly!!! at first it did the same
thing as yesterday, then i installed speedmgmt and ppp-2.4.0b2-2.i386.rpm.
speedmgmt was messing up at first, but after just starting and restarting
speedmgmt and unplugging and re-plugging in the modem, they eventually
agreed, and the modem synched up at full speed!! I made sure all my modules
were loaded, and they were, then i typed pppd. *sigh* and that's where it
crapped out on me. it can't find /usr/lib/pppd/plugins/pppoatm.so I looked
in /usr/lib and there's no pppd directory at all! i've GOT to get that to
work without rebuilding the kernel. if i rebuild the kernel i KNOW what's
going to happen. i'll get all kinds of errors with USB, eth0 won't come up
and other assorted bumfuckery will take place (just like it has the previous
20 times i've done it), and i'll lose the progress i've made.
how can i manually configure pppd to get it to come up correctly? if i have
to recompile the kernel, i might as well give up now. taking a look at the
present kernel configuration, everything is actually already set up
correctly. there should be no need for that. HELP!

Bingo. In your BIOS you probably have a line that says:
PnP OS Installed = Yes
Change it to 'No' and you should be okay.

It won't be long before the CPU is a card in a slot on your ATX videoboard
