HUnt a tiny linux. The main distros are a bit too bloated now. You
won't be able to run X of course but you can run others.

head to www.google.com, browse their web directory and you'll find
stuff there, try Computers/software/operating
systems/linux/distributions/tiny linux

Plenty of small stuff there that will work. YOu can for example use
"Toms' Root/boot disk" and just boot it from the floppy each time, or
make your own via micro linux or small linux.

It would be nice if the Printing-HOWTO would mention this. What worked
for me was putting a simple list of hostnames in /etc/hosts.lpd. It is
better to use this than hosts.equiv since that could give other access:

localhost
sierra
workstation

(assuming these are defined in /etc/hosts or DNS)

Your :rp is incorrect. It should be the server's name for the printer.

Try the fetchmail package. That's what you need to poll different POP servers
for email.

Which Linux? Recent RedHat versions automatically modify existing
/etc/resolv.conf nameserver entries (but not if there are none). In fact
I had to specifically disable that feature in the scripts so it would not
divert from my own DNS.

Otherwise you could include the 'usepeerdns' pppd option and manipulate
/etc/resolv.conf from /etc/ppp/ip-up (or ip-up.local). I passed the
domain name as pppd option ipparam (which ends up as $6 in ip-up) and
used 'case' hear because I had another connection with different
configuration:

case $6 in
xnet.com | compuserve.com | freewwweb.com )
        echo "domain $6" > /etc/resolv.conf
        echo "nameserver $DNS1" >> /etc/resolv.conf
        if [ -n $DNS2 ] ; then
                echo "nameserver $DNS2" >> /etc/resolv.conf
        fi
        sleep 1;;
esac

When you install Slackware, and run a command such as "ls", files,
directories, and executables are shown in different colors. Is there an
option to do this in a different distrobution? Or how else can this be
done?

An old Slackware distribution ought to install (or maybe even the latest).
I have Slackware 3.5 installed on a 386 with 8megs RAM. It runs just
fine. No X though.

Most distros would have ``/usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/Colour-ls.txt.gz''
or wherever your distro puts the documentation this year. For
some reason, I can't find it anymore at <http://www.linuxdoc.org>.
If you have not got it on your system, email me and I send you a
copy.

<rant>
I don't understand why color-ls is not standard on all the big
distributions? Slackware had it years ago. On a similar note,
why do millions of Linux users worldwide *all* have to fix the
backspace key under X?

man sudo

Use with care.

For the mounting and un-mounting of disks, you can also specify the
``user'' option on the appropriate line in /etc/fstab. Then you don't
need sudo for that.

Many other things can be done by creating appropriate groups,
e.g. ``dialout''. You put all users who should have access to the
modem into that group. No need for sudo in that case.

Cheers

Is it possible that my comp, the perfect candidate for linux, has some

for me to get Linux running. First the Mandrake distro off the Max Linux
mag. That worked but soon went haywire. Then redhat 6.2 deluxe....this
went on for one week in which time I saw the Gnome desktop once.....
just once. Next I ordered Slackware 7.1 and after what seemed a perfect
installation during which time I almost passed out with ecstacy, saying this
is the one.....this is the one to no one in particular, it would not boot. I
have
learned a lot, but I would have learned more if I could have gotten
XF86Setup
to run at least once. It's a P166, 96MB ram, WD 2 GB hd, Maxtor 7 GB hd,
voodoo 3 2000 pci, ide cd rom, scsi cd burner. From all that I have read it
should run Linux fine, and it almost has. Is it possible that it never will?
I have to know so I can do the other activities that I used to do.

Hi David,

Still cannot get this to work. Below is the 'printcap' on the

like:

:rp=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\sierra

I've tried to print a test page after changing it manually, no luck. Is
that syntax correct?

The next time I try to edit printcap with printtool it will get rid of
the 'sierra' entry and again it will look like the entry below.

What does the error "Sierra: lpd: lp: Your host does not have line
printer access" mean? I get that error when trying to print with
Mandrake 'PrintDrake'

Client or Server?

Most distributions have a client program. Have you looked for one in
your dist? What dist are you using?

Subject: How bad is the cpu load of IDE drives?

I'm planning on setting up a audio jukebox on my 24x7 linux system where
I'm going to use a mucking big hard drive to hold mp3@256kbps sound files
of all the CD I currently listen to as well as a bunch of digitized LPs.

My initial experements show that @ 256kbps, I can get a 7x compression
ratio that sounds as good as straight wav files. ( I got s/pdif output
working on my soundblaster live card. )

The question is, should I go w/ a scsi drive or a cheapo IDE drive. For a
while I had a plextor 32x/12x/10x ide cdrw drive hooked up and when it was
writing @ 12x my system nearly died. I tossed it over to a junk windoze
PC on the lan, but I wonder if the problem was due to it being IDE or
perhaps some important missing setting like dma.

How bad is IDE performance? I'm not sure about what (E)IDE controller is
on my mainboard. It isn't that old; I bought it because it has an onboard
controller for ultra2 uw-scsi.
