I happend to notice my "ever so stable" RH7.1 box (only os on the machine)
and has been running just fine (at least I think since i haven't done the
obligitory "uptime" command in a while) and notice that the machine was
rebooting! I hadn;t touched the machine (it's not connected to a network)
and I've never noticed the behavoir before. Is there a log to look at
that'll tell me why the machine rebooted, or when the machine rebooted?

Jeff.

Thanks Clive for your reply.

Hummm ...

So there is "no" way that I can make use of my current modem to talk
with RedHat 7.1 ? I need to purchase a new modem for this ? In that
case, can anyone please advise for selecting "good" modem for homepc?

My homepc configuration :
1. OS1 : Windows 2000
2. OS2 : RedHat 7.1
3. Machine : Dell Workstation 400.

Thanks in advance,
Rahul.

A "kernel panic" means that something has gone so severely wrong that
the kernel must halt execution. You see these when you have flaky
hardware, or when you are using experimental kernels (not 2.4.2, but
previous 2.4 versions and the 2.3 series), or when you have mangled the
boot parameters. Why 2.4.2, anyway? They're up to 2.4.5, and in my
experience, it has far fewer problems than 2.4.2.

Device 03:01 is also known as /dev/hda1 ; is this the correct place for
your / ? You can fix it by booting the older kernel, editing
/etc/lilo.conf and making sure it's right, then rerunning /sbin/lilo .
I hope you didn't mess with the settings for the older kernel, and you
left the older kernel bootable. When upgrading your kernel, you
*ALWAYS* leave a known good kernel available for boot in lilo.conf, and
you always have an alternative means of booting the system (boot
floppy), or you will lose.

>When I edited lilo I assumed that the root partition would be the same
>one as my other kernel.

I hope you didn't edit /sbin/lilo . Editing /etc/lilo.conf is OK, but
you shouldn't edit binaries directly unless you know what you are doing.

I haven't checked the recent state of the Alsa drivers, i'm guessing they're
making fast progress and soon will be ready for the mainstream
distributions.

Last i tried it, it had severe performance problem, it would cut off
sound output on all disk access (on a cheap eMachine, at the time only
Alsa supported that chipset). Plus 8-bit unsigned sound did not work, and it
had that annoying feature where it would mute all the sounds
everytime you boot up.

I've found a version of it that I can download at tweakfiles.com. I'll try
that.

Well, I thought that, too. However, when I reinstalled RedHat
(reformatted the partition and did a complete reinstall), I still got a
CRC error. I couldn't figure it out. I may just have to try again, when I
get more time.

> Did you have foresight to have a backup kernel in lilo.conf?

not there, but I have a floppy disk that I'm using. I can copy the kernel
image on the floppy into my /boot folder and setup lilo to use that
image, instead. It works, until the power goes out again, and I have to
start all over. I'll see what happens if I leave a backup on. Maybe it
won't be quite as bad, next time.

Yeah, I booted from the floppy. I've also used the rescue. I can't figure
out the problem, but I think it might be hardware related. I'll try out
that program (I have Windows on my other partition, so I'll use it there).

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi,
I know I am asking alot here but I am swimming in many terms and alternatives I
don't understand, even after reading how-tos. Trying this post again on
several newsgroups, it got lost in the shuffle last time.

I am trying to share dsl (bell sympatico HSE) from winME to linux (Mk8.0-
2.4x kernel) I am wondering if anyone who has got this working would be kind
enough to give me a step by step re what to do on the linux machine to get it
going. (and once setup how to start the connection and browse)
(may have to phrase it like "Dick and Jane do Internet sharing" : I am totally
inept at this. :-)

DSL is up and running fine on ME and Internet connection sharing is running on
the ME box. We have connected the 2 computers with rj-45 crossover cables (no
hub) and the NIC lights are on in both machines (but if pinging ME I get "host
unreachable" though the 10/100 light flashes. --perhaps I need to add my IP
address on ME somewhere ?)

much thanks for any help.

Try:

'ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 up'
followed by:
'route add -net 127.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 dev lo'

You should add those lines to the first script that gets executed from
init
during startup. With my distro (SuSE) this is:

/etc/rc.d/boot

Check the docs of your distro how this script is called.

Good luck

For some reason your loopback network device was not started. You can start it
by hand with:

ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 up

but you probably should poke around why it isn't being started automatically
(maybe you have to configure the network before it is started).

IIRC, you don't need the route command for modern kernels.

Hi.

  I have a strange problem.

I try to set up a Debian 2.2, which I had done many times on Alpha
and i386. Now the installation kernel dies during the boot of the
setup-disk. I even tried to start up the stuff direct from the disc,
but no avail.

The kernel is a 2.2.19pre. The system I try to setup is an old 486 (Cyrix)
with some IDE.

The panic occurs between the building of the hash-map and the testing
against some NIC's.

Any idea what goes wrong here?

TIA

Sonds like your font server isn't running. Try this as root:

/etc/init.d/xfs start

I've tried rp_pppoe and all I got was connection timed out. This was on
Mandrake 7.1. On 8.0 it locks up my machine and I end up having to shut it
down.

As far as set-up I'm not sure what you need. I have a HP Pavilion with
K6-2/300 , Vodoo4PCI, 192MB of RAM.

As far as the ethernet card I'm using a Linksys LNE100TX Instant Etherfast
10/100 LAN card and using the tulip driver. I've tried a 3com card and get
the same problem.

I've never had any problems connecting to the internet with dialup but I'm
completly clueless when it comes to anything related to networking and I
believe tech support at my isp knows less than I do. It's probably something
simple I'm overlooking, but I don't even know where to start.

Thanks,
Scott

Ah, that's interesting, due to my mobo with a VIA Southbridge,

In kde you could try using alt-f2 to get a command line box, type xkill and
then use the skull pointer to kill netscape or whatever by clicking on it.
