Ah, but this is very common in manefacturing chips. You rate them
according to the the speed at which they function properly, given som
margins. The fact that all Celerons 300A are marked at 300 does not mean
that they would not pass sucessfully at a higher speed, the rating is set
by marketing considerations. Intel had a very good production line, but
they downmark some of their cpu:s to keep the prices for the high end up.
It is not that unserious for a company to buy a bunch of cpu:s, test them
at a higher clock and see which of them perform correctly. I believe
500MHz is quite a bit above the point where this will be economical, but
450MHz will be passed by about 70% according to what I have heared.
In an ideal world competition would force all manefacturers to sell mark
their chips correctly and selling them for a price somewhat based on
manefacturing and development costs. This would indeed make overclocking
cpus rather menaningless. This not being an ideal world, there may be
cases like the 300A where a business case can be made.
