 i've heard from a few other newbies having the same argument, which
stems from (strongly felt) mis-assumptions on their part.

 In the Unix world source distributions (kernel or otherwise) are packed
as a single self-contained tarfile which contains the required directory
structure.  Most SRPMS are simply a wrappper around the tarfiles, which
are meant to be extracted and built in the same manner as any other
tarred source dist.  This is good, it means that the RPM is exactly the
same as the pre-extracted contents of the archive, and it is as the
author released it.  I don't want redhat or anybody else for that matter
monkeying with source dists.

 to make a long story short, extract your SRPM, then untar the resulting
file(s) from /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES.  Its painfully easy, really... 
The current method is the correct method.
