There are mainly two sets of sound drivers for Linux both supporting
the Open Sound System standard.

One is the free OSS drivers which are included in the Linux kernel.
To check which card are supported or fetch the latest drivers, go to
http://www.linux.org.uk/OSS/

And there are the commercial OSS at
http://www.opensound.com/linux.html

Check the supported cards at both sites. Vortex PCI , which you
suggested, seem to be supported by the commercial OSS with early
beta drivers and Vortex2 PCI is not supported yet.

I run the commercial drivers on two machines, one with Turtle Beach
Malibu, but the Wave synt is not supported there, another machine
with SB AWE64Gold, where I can download soundfonts, works excellent
(both machines are SMP).

I have recently purchased a couple of SB PCI128, which are supported
both by the free and commercial drivers, but have not tested them
yet. If you purchase the commercial drivers, tick the SMP box then.

        Best regards
