I have both the Butenhof book, as well as the book by Bil Lewis and Daniel
Berg, called "Multithreaded Programming With Pthreads".
I really like the Lewis/Berg book better than Butenhof. I respect Butenhof
greatly, and his book is not bad, but I feel like I learned more from
Lewis/Berg's book. Keep in mind I am by far no pthreads expert (yet hehe),
but what I do know about them I learned from these two books.
Anyhow, you can find the Lewis/Berg book at www.fatbrain.com at:
http://www1.fatbrain.com/asp/bookinfo/bookinfo.asp?theisbn=0136807291
Or you can find it at Amazon.com at:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0136807291/o/qid=959387438/sr=8-2/ref
=aps_sr_b_1_2/104-2769562-0023950
The prices are the same within 1 US cent (around $28), so shipping cost and
options will be the differentiator.
If you buy the Lewis/Berg book, pay special attention to the chapter that
gets into scheduling. It really helped round out my understanding both of
thread scheduling, but also of process scheduling in the kernel as well. I
am no Unix guru yet, and I have yet to touch any kernel code, but I have
learned a lot reading some of these books, and someday perhaps I will get
involved in dabbling with Linux or FreeBSD hacking.
Hope this helps,
Seth
