Thanks for responding.
I didn't see any details on this "decompressor" module in the
documentation, so I just assumed that it supported read-only access on
zqft0. Where can I find out more about how to read tapes written with
zqft0 with an earlier version of ftape?

I put the following lines in /etc/conf.modules:
alias char-major-27 zftape
options ftape ft_fdc_driver=ftape-internal,none,none,none
which, according to the documentation, should get the modules
auto-loaded. I have verified that /sbin/kerneld is running.
