ftape 4.02 on RedHat 5.2

I haven't been able to get ftape 4.02 to run correctly on RH 5.2.
What I need in particular is to get the zqft0 device running
correctly, so that I can restore a backup made using the built-in
compression.  If anyone has successfully installed ftape 4.02 on RH 5.2,
can you tell me exactly what you did?  (Please respond directly to me.)
