ftape 4.02 and Ditto Drive

Using Redhat 5.1 and added ftape 4.02.  I see bpck-fdc, zftape,ftape
running with lsmod.  However, when I run ftmt -f /dev/nqft0 status I get
device not configure.  Can anyone tell a dummy what's wrong?
