I had this same problem.
  After compiling I followed the instructions about setting up auto kernel
loading and I got the same message. Looking at /var/log/messages, suggested
it couldn't load a driver. When I did a lsmod I saw I had ftape and zftape
but not ftape-internal. When I did a modprobe ftape-internal it worked like
a dream. At one point I even cut out the text from the readme file but this
also failed so it wasn't a typo! In the end I had to resort to putting the
modules in rc.modules file.
Oh well mine works well now.

Hi Robert,

Be sure that ftape is NOT compiled into the kernel, from your
message below it looks like it might be.  Send a snipit from
your /var/log/messages file.
