Hi!

Trying to kill the keyboard, [EMAIL PROTECTED] produced:
> Why not tar?

Tar + any compression spells disaster. Since tar generates just
one large file, a damaged bit (which can always happen) will
make *ALL* following data unusable. Tar without compression (or
with a block compression) will probably be OK.

> What is afio?

A better cpio. Main point is: afio compresses file by file.
So a damaged bit makes that file unreadable, but the next one
will work again.

(warning: do not replace/change/restore the gzip it uses *while
restoring from archive* ... make a copy and use that one -- or
make a bootdisk with afio and gzip to be loaded in a ramdrive.
(After all, you probably have a deleted FS, so you want a
bootdisk anyway.) See the afio man page).
