FC-20 error

Hi, 

I try to use the example found in FAQ:

# cd /usr/src
# tar cf /dev/ftape linux

result: 

tar: Cannot open /dev/ftape: Input/output error
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I'm using an FC-20 controller with an HP Colorado T3000 drive.
The version of ftape is 2.08

Any assistence is welcomed.
