Wow - are you sure ftape is your only problem? Kernel 2.2.2 is not the best one,
I would upgrade at least to 2.2.3 (because I got some strange problems while
trying to upgrade...); don't forget "make clean"; I got the impression that
sometimes "make clean" is not enough: I removed the ftape directory as a
whole and unpacked .tar.gz again - this helped indeed.

No - but perhaps more information is necessary. What kind of tape drive
do you use? What about the errors in /var/log/messages? If your system hangs
the last messages are perhaps interesting...
