This should give an error message like

        ftmt: invalid tape operation `-'

> or

Did you ever try

        ftmt -f /dev/nqft0 fsf 1
             ^^ ^

if you omit the -f switch (or --file) ftmt uses the compiled in
default or the device defined by the TAPE environment variable.

This should work without problems. If you have trouble instead
check with

        vtblc -f /dev/rawft0

if the tape contains a volume table, which is necessary to know
where the files are located on the tape.

Yes. It should work. Have a look at

        man ftmt

even if the ftmt man page is an alias to the mt man page, ftmt is
command line compatible to mt but it knows the special ioctl
calls to the ftape driver.

Did you download the ftape documentation? Look for

        ftape-4.x-doc-1.03.tar.gz

There is a lot of information. And you can use your favorite web
browser to read it.

Good luck.
