the ftape package is a driver, that is a kind of supplement to the
kernel. After having installed ftape (modules ftape, zftape and
a hardware related module, e.g. ftape-internal or bpck-fdc) the
kernel will be able to access those floppy tape drives.

That was the kernel space. Additionally you must have some
programs regarding the user space: This is the ftape-tool package.
Most important: ftmt, that provides you with methods to handle your
drive (rewind, retension, erase, go to the beginning, go the 
end of the tape, go to the next archive.) Of course, these program
can't work without the driver "ftape".
