Douglas,
Well, I downloaded ftape-3.04d.tar.gz and installed it. I did a make
from the top level, but did not do the make install. I received
several warnings and an error when compiling fdc-io.c, but ftformat
must not use it, since it seemed to make okay. I went to the ftformat
directory and executed it from there. Unfortunately, it did not work.
I did a
mt -f /dev/nftape retension
and looked in /proc. The values for ft were the same as when I did
the superformat of a floppy (base =0x3f0, irq=6, dma=2), so I figured
the setup of ftape was reasonable. I edited MCONFIG to be consistent
with those values (modifying the CMS F-10/F-20 values, since I have
a CMS F-20 internal drive). What I received back from doing ftformat
was:
> ftformat --mode=auto --format-parameters qic80-307ft
Error getting tape drive status: Input/output error
However, when I did a status, things seemed okay:
>mt -f /dev/nftape status
qic-117 drive type = 0x00047, File number=-1, block number=-1.
mt_resid: 0, mt-erreg: 0x1a
mt_dsreg: 0x20d045, mt_qstat: 0x41000000

Now, I am at a loss. I am not sure what I have to do to try to
get ftape operational (for anything other than retensioning and
rewinding). Nothing that does I/O to the ftape drive seems to
work, not erase, fsf, bsf, tar, etc. They just generate errors
and give "permission denied" and "could not write to tape" messages.
However, the tape movement commands seem to work fine (retension,
rewind, etc.).
Your help is appreciated, and the help of anyone else that can provide
a positive contribution to my dilemma. If I cannot get 3.04d working,
why should I be able to get 4.02 working?
Thanks,
Chuck Burton
