Urgs!  2.08 is 4+ years old, so that's probably the same as
using Windows 2.0 ... from which grave did you dig that old
software, and how come the bits did not get eaten by worms?

As I said earlier: 3.04d is for kernel 2.0.x, if you mix it
with 2.2.x you might get unpredicted results!  Use the newest
*unstable*, as 4.0[23] won't even compile on 2.2.x,

I thought that drive didn't even work (properly/at all) under
2.08.  Hmmm.  Or was that the accellerator card?

That should probably not have anything to do with dd but
probably could happen with any other method, too.  You'll just
have to be faster than the tape to keep it nicely streaming!

I used dump/restore piped through "buffer -k10k" and some more
options and it worked well (apart from fast-forward/backward)
under 3.04d.
