The change is that I put:

parallel port tape drives.

fixes the problem, but use at your own risk.

The problem is that sometimes ftape writes some blocks with
zeroes tot the tape. Specifically, the following sequence of
commands can reproduce the error:

tar -cvf /dev/qft0 /bin # works ok
tar -tvf /dev/qft0 # works ok, too
tar -cvf /dev/qft0 /etc # fills the first data segment with zeroes
tar -tvf /dev/qft0 # tar finds the zeroes, and thinks the tape is empty

It doesn't seem to happen with internal tape drives. I'll try to
fix it ASAP.
