You should manually link /dev/tape to whatever device you want to be your
default tape drive device.  On my system, I have 4 drives, so I'd be
slightly annoyed if the make install just willy-nilly grabbed the
/dev/tape entry and changed it on me.  

To fix this, type: ln -sf /dev/nqft0 /dev/tape and all should be quite
well.

Or, you can just type: ftmt -f /dev/nqft0 status
