Hi Gang!

i just got a new (used) external SCSI tape drive. The drive inside the
box is a Wangtek (model I can't recall right now, sorry) DDS2 drive. The
housing it is in has some name on it I've never heard of...

it has a low-density 50-pin SCSI connector, and I've connected it to the
identical connector on the edge of my Adaptec 1542c card with a cable
that has been known to work with a tape drive (at work) in the past
on another machine. The terminator that WAS plugged directly into the
adaptec card is now in the second slot on the back of the drive.
Q: Does it matter which connector on the drive has the terminator and
which has the cable? They don't seem to be marked.

I'm running RH 5.2, 2.0.36 kernel.

When I boot up the controller DOES NOT report the existence of the
drive. I'm thinking this is a bad sign, am I right?

Once booted, of course, there are no signs of life from the drive (except
its lights are on and the unit will swallow/eject a tape when appropriate).
I assume if it were working it would be /dev/st0. i manually loaded st.o
(insmod st.o) but "mt -f /dev/st0 status" results in an immediate
diagnostic:

/dev/st0: operation not permitted by device.

i guess this is reasonable considering that the controller itself
doesn't seem to know it's there.

Anybody got any good ideas, other than throw it in the trash?

Thanks!

Fred
