ftformat error : Unknown format API version. Giving up.

I am using the newest ftape & ftape-tools. 
With ftformat, I keep getting the error

Unknown format API version. Giving up. 

What does this mean ? I cannot find this error in the documentation.
It appears regardless what settings I make.
