You probably need one of the development versions (4.03...) to have good
compatibility with ftape-tools. For kernels in the 2.2.x series, I think
you have to use

ftape-4.x-1999_09_11.tar.gz

to compile with the 2.2.x kernels

I had previously that error when using the kernel stock module and
ftape-tools. Using debian package ftape-source, which I think is based
in version above, or at least has some of the patches applied I was able
to successfully format tapes.
