All you need to do is format the tape under OS/2, then use the 'mt -f
/dev/qft0 erase' command to clear the other "logical format" and replace
it with the Linux ftape format.
Also, you really don't need to format tapes that often. By reten'ing
them before use and using the mt erase command toclobber the table of
contents, an average QIC-80 class tape is good for about 100 backups
before new bad spots show up.
Now, from a reality check standpoint - you only have ONE tape??? This
is a "all the eggs in one basket" scenario. Unless your data's just a
fun aspect of your life, I'd recommend you get a few more. Fry's
Electronics and CompUSA both have QIC-80 and QIC-120 tapes for around
