Yes.  If I format using ftape-tools (1.08 although it has always
occurred with previous revs also), erase goes fine, format seems to go
fine, then verify runs to 99-100% completion and it's at that point
that I get the 'track out of bounds' error.

FWIW, anytime in the past when I try to use ftape-tools to format I must
always select as two of the options, 'do not read header segment'
(otherwise things will never get underway), and 'mode of operation =
auto'.  Whether doing either/both of these is correct/incorrect, in my
flailing around to get tapes formatted I get further with these two
selections that without.

I've made the changes you suggest, it's compiling, and I'll send results
as soon as I have them.
