I'll give it a shot.  But if I use ftape-tools to lay down the Linux
format won't I be in the same boat as before, which is that at the end
of the format procedure it aborts with 'track out of bounds'?  (Guess
I'll find out in an hour or so).

I have lots of tapes but only one formatted to work under Linux.  This
is for home use so the potential loss would be a little painful but not
catastrophic.  One tape gives me more than enough room for saving
important cfg files and the like.  But having a second tape to swap with
the first would be better...
