Sorry Brad,

I have to correct myself. I got the same message, but with another cause:
the usb host (VIA uhci) timed out on a control message. I believe that this
failure is due to a device firmware bug. However, it works fine with the
MS Windows USB driver 8-(.

Retries set to 3 or to 4 didn't solve the problem. (If a control message times
out, I have to reset the root hub).

Part of the problem seems to be that the time from connection of the
usb cable to driver enumeration is shorter than under Windows.
