The VIA bug I guess you're referring to locks up the HC completely.
Unplugging the device won't fix it :/

2.4.18 has some known HCD problems. 2.4.19rc3 fixes all of the known bugs
(I think).

That could be the cause of the problems too.

Harm, were there any messages in dmesg around the time you started
having problems?
