As the ethernet controller was kinda flaky I stopped using it.
I don't recall it giving any output when problem started.
I recall that the kaweth driver printed 
kaweth.c: Failed to set Rx mode: -16   and
kaweth.c: in_interrupt()
in my logs.

I'll give it a spin with 2.4.19-rc3, could take a week thoug.
