If it's connected to a powered hub, you can rule that issue out. (Powered == root hub, or external hub with a power source.)


Separately, it's true that Linux doesn't currently reject some illegal USB configurations ... root hub connected to bus powered hub connected to bus powered hub, then connected to your modem. And it doesn't yet even track how much of the power budget for a bus-powered hub is allocated.
