Great, tell them to use the 2.6 kernel and udev, that solves the problem for them just fine :) Seriously, for 2.4, I can't accept such a big change as it is in "maintainance mode" only. Also, no new distro will be shipping 2.4 kernels, so adding this feature now does not make any sense.
