Here is a patch against linux-2.6.8.1 to make usbnet works with freebox. This device is an ADSL modem which does not return a valid MAC address. CDCEther was working with it in linux-2.4 because it was not checking the MAC address.

Hi Guilhem, it does have a MAC address, but there are problems getting
hold of it: the string descriptor that holds the MAC address has an invalid
header. The same goes for the Manufacturer field (you'll notice that it
doesn't turn up in /proc/bus/usb/devices). By adding a work-around in
the part of the core which handles string descriptors, it is possible to get
the right strings. I am working on such a patch. By the way, do you have
the original freebox, or a newer one?

All the best,

Duncan.

I have the original one. BTW, I notice that sometimes I have to restart my computer (Dell Dimension 4500 with USB 1 and 2 support) to be able to connect the device.

Thank you for exploring the problem,

Guilhem Lavaux.
