I don't think any particular version is "recommended".  People are still 
adding workarounds for gcc 2.95, so you can go back as far as that if you 
wish.  I'm also using 3.4.3.

No.  The USB 2.0 specification is very clear about this; the device can 
tell from the initialization sequence sent by the host whether to operate 
at high speed or full speed.  There's no guesswork involved.

Certainly it should.

It's safe to assume the sticky was faulty all along -- since nobody can
possibly prove the assumption is wrong!  As for the other three sticks...
Who knows?  But I wouldn't recommend that brand to anybody.
