Summary: USB 2 storage devices fail on motherboard plug

It's a little unusual for usbcore.old_scheme_first to matter for so
many
different kinds of devices. Do these devices work without that module
parameter if they are plugged into the rear USB ports? Do the devices
work when attached to a system running Windows?
I wonder if this might be caused by some timing problem. Maybe it has
been fixed in 2.6.12.

Alan,
Thanks for your interest!
First, I have had to add a comment to the bug that, after the first
attempt, usbcore.old_scheme_first did not work as a fix. Failure has
been so complete since then that I'm wondering if I somehow managed to
start 2.4 instead or perpetrated some other equally as embarrassing
gaffe.
Yes the devices work without that parameter if plugged into the rear
ports. However, in my kernel configs I do not use modules, so my one
success was a direct kernel parameter entered from the grub command
line.
Much to my surprise, my old WinME partition started up and actually
runs, so I tested the device in the front panel sockets and yes, it
does work normally under windows.
As to being fixed in 2.6.12, I am admittedly a hair behind, but I am
testing it under 2.6.12.3 release. If there is some other version I
could usefully test, please let me know. In fact, if there is anything
useful I could add or do, please let me know.
