The speedtouch driver does the same thing: at strategic moments it
reads a bunch of bytes from the modem, without doing anything with
them, not even looking at them.  That's because the modem requires
it: if you don't read those bytes, it won't work.  Perhaps the gl620a
has a similar problem.
